If it's truly a contract issue, then I think we'll see her back sooner than later, perhaps midway in season 13. I don't see how Grey's can maintain their viewing number come the fall, but maybe they will. I'm thinking Arizona will be given some interesting story's to keep the Calle/Arizona fanbase, which is great for Jessica Capshaw.
If it's other opportunities, then fans should hear something soon, maybe over the summer. If that's true, I would think fans would see a brief return of Callie Torres at some point in season 13 to close out her story. I can't see Greys going beyond season 13 if season 13 is as weak as season 12.
I'd like to think Sara would come back to finish the storyline. This can't be the final legacy for Callie Torres, chasing tail across country as Bailey said. The fact Bailey actually said those words means the writers know it's a poor decision.
Has any actor/actress left Greys to go on to larger success than what they had on Greys? Some have been busy, Kim Raver, Chyler Leigh and Eric Dane have been in TV shows, but was their professional success bigger than what Grey's offered? I'm not sure, I haven't watched much beyond Grey's, so I don't know. If life beyond Grey's is more rewarding, then it's hard to see Sara Ramirez returning for much beyond an episode or two.
I would think being asked to star in their own shows qualifies as more success than Grey's. Eric Dane's series has been going pretty well and Kim Raver has been all over the place. I was quite surprised with Chyler Leigh's Olivia Benson looking character in her cop show, though the premise was kinda dumb. I think we will see more of Leigh in the future.
