I, too, call BS. Shonda has had two seasons, 3 "years" in Grey's time, to build towards a Calzona reunion. If she was seriously prolonging this reunion based on the assumption that Sara and Jessica would continue to blindly renew their contracts then she's an idiot - and I don't believe Shonda is that.

What couple has been separated on GA for two+ years and then reunited with no show of lingering feelings on either side? None.

I don't believe that she had a Calzona reunion in store at all. She's saying this to bait Calzona fans and keep them watching in the event of a Sara return.

I also don't believe that she didn't find out until the season was wrapped. That would've made for a series of too many happy coincidences. Why else would Penny/Callie be brought together mid-season after zero mention of a relationship for several episodes? Are we really supposed to buy that she happened to write Penny as exiting the series through a fellowship/grant and, by happenstance, had also written Callie as abruptly moving across the country? Please.

This reminds me of Webber telling Callie he had "big plans!" for her when she announced she'd be moving to Africa with Arizona.

But you do realize that had Shonda put Calzona back together for the 2nd time after the divorce, then we'd still be sitting here with Sara wanting to take a break with the prospect of having Calzona yet again break up. To be honest, she didn't need to say this to bait the Calzona fans. Sara's tweet did that all by itself by her specific wording of "but for now I'm taking some welcomed time off". They already had faith that Sara would come back. That's how loyal the Calzona fanbase is. The only thing that Shonda did was make the Calzona fans feel better. I don't think Shonda would want to give Callie Torres this exit. Demoting Callie career wise after working so hard to make it where she is just to follow a resident. There's a reason why the finale didn't look like a real final exit. Because it was clearly supposed to be a cliffhanger which is exactly what it looked like. If you're a casual viewer who doesn't go online, you'd never know whether Callie left or not.

Yes, obviously. The difference between Shonda's statement and Sara's is that Sara is speaking specifically to her character alone. Callie could come back a million times between now and the series finale and never renter a relationship with Arizona again. Sara's comments made no reference to the pairing.

Shonda, on the other hand, made the added effort to tie in her "big plans" for Callie to the Calzona relationship, stating that she always intended for them to be endgame and maybe we'll be able to see that play out. That, IMO, is baiting. Not only that, but I don't believe that was Shonda's intention at all. If it were, we would've seen some hint of romantic feelings from either Callie or Arizona and we haven't. They're divorced, dating, entering new, committed relationships, battling in court over custody of their daughter - these are not the signs of two people in ~love.

Callie's journey could and should continue outside of her romantic relationships. A Sara return does not necessarily mean a Calzona reunion, but Shonda has now essentially equated the two. She's had seasons to work towards a reunion between Callie and Arizona, and she hasn't. Why would I believe her now?

I never implied that Sara referenced the pairing. I saw Shonda's statement about her plans for Callie completely aside from her saying she had always planned for Calzona to get back together. She never specified when that would've taken place, but it's obvious that the plans she had for Callie would be in S13 had Sara not left.

"If it were, we would've seen some hint of romantic feelings from either Callie or Arizona and we haven't. They're divorced, dating, entering new, committed relationships, battling in court over custody of their daughter - these are not the signs of two people in ~love. "

We haven't seen anything from Callie...she was in a relationship so that's not surprising, but I've said all along & I stand by it right down to their last scene, that Arizona still loved Callie. It was more than just about Sofia asking why Mommy was sad. When the anger & hurt blew over, Arizona hated seeing Callie sad & unhappy. Arizona made the ultimate sacrifice, sacrificing her own time with her child that she fought for & won, just so Callie could leave & "be happy". Arizona did not look happy at the very end of that hug. She loved Callie enough to let her go. That's the true meaning of love. And had Sara not needed this time off, I'm sure that would've been explored.

You're right, Sara's return doesn't means a definite Calzona reunion, but after Shonda's comments & her saying she's crossing her fingers that it could still happen in the future, she'd look pretty damn stupid if she didn't follow through now since reiterating for the first time in a long while that Calzona is MFEO in her eyes.

"She's had seasons to work towards a reunion between Callie and Arizona, and she hasn't. Why would I believe her now?"

As much as I hate it, too, there was no rule saying a certain timetable for putting them back together had to be met. For all we know, had Sara come back for 13, it could've been Calzona's season. Maybe it was 14. At this point we'll never know. I just know that it seems like there's a small possibility for Sara to return per her own words & for Calzona to reunite per Shonda's words.

I feel like there's no winning for Shonda here. Shonda has always said that Calzona was MFEO & told us to trust the journey. Those quotes were a long time ago. A lot of Calzona fans started to wonder if Shonda had changed her mind about them & when Shonda finally comes out & reiterates what she's said about Calzona all along & literally tells us she was putting them back together, it's not good enough for Calzona fans.

I admire your faith! LOL.

You're absolutely right, there is no timetable for a reconciliation but the believablility of said reconciliation drastically diminishes as time goes on. In Grey's world it has been 3 years since Callie and Arizona were romantically involved. That's a massive amount of time. Are we really supposed to buy that Callie and Arizona would realistically find their way back to one another after 4 years (season 13) or even 5? Especially with the lack of care and consideration that these writers devote to storytelling? LOL.

Honestly, I feel like winning for Shonda would have been to say, "I'm super sad about Sara leaving too! I love Callie!" The end. She was under no obligation to comment on Calzona and yet...

And I guess we'll have to disagree as to whether Shonda really did have intentions of bringing Callie and Arizona back together. As I said, if that were the case then she's had literal years to lay the groundwork for that and she hasn't. Shonda has made false statements in the past, so I don't put any stock into her words at all.

Basically (and this is jacked from Tumblr but it's just so apt!):

Shonda (season 9): I have big, exciting plans for Callie this season!
Sara (after s9): Wow, that was…intense. But now season 10 looks promising! I can’t wait.
Sara (after s10): So…what was that?…I…was that the plan or…
Shonda: Huh?…Oh, right. No, next season for sure. Oh you just wait for it.
Sara (after s11): So…what is next for Callie? I mean I think I know where this is going, since it did get a little better for her this season. I would like for her to-
Shonda: Season 12 is the season where EVERYTHING happens. Oh, I’m so excited for Callie, and this BIG thing is going to blow everyone’s minds!
Sara: …
Shonda (after s12): So, listen season 13 is gonna be HUGE for Cal-
Sara: Uh…yeah. I’m actually ready to take a break, I’ve been-
Shonda: Aw, dang! Just when I had big plans for Callie.
Sara: …

Like I said, just like Richard in season 7!

I'm not really showing faith in anything. It all comes down to whether or not Sara wants to come back. If she does, I do think Shonda sticks to her word & ends Calzona together. There's really nothing crazy about believing that. We're talking about a couple who were together for 7 years & literally paved ways in the tv world. Do you really believe that the poorly written Penny was Callie's happy ending? If you do, then so be it. I personally don't. If Sara didn't leave, I would bet anything that we would've never seen Penny again.

I understand in Grey's time it's been 3 years. But I don't see why that matters. Why can't a married couple who share a child fall back in love? There's no timetable on love. No rules. It's not even unrealistic in real life let alone in Grey's. I've seen it happen. And when has anything been "realistic" in Grey's. That's one of the most talked about things when it comes to Grey's. That the timeline is always off & nothing is realistic. This is nothing but a dramatic soap. It's tv.

"As I said, if that were the case then she's had literal years to lay the groundwork for that and she hasn't."

Again, that doesn't prove or mean anything. That just means that the SL didn't happen yet, & now with Sara needing time off, it can't. If they had laid the ground work out only for Sara to need a break, then that groundwork would've been for nothing & probably would've been more painful for fans. I'm going to assume that had Sara wanted to come back, they'd want her to align her contract with JCaps which is another 2 years.

I do know that right now it is what it is. I have no idea if I'll continue to watch next season. I'm not going to sit around & wait for the possibility that Sara comes back just so Calzona gets back together. Shonda's words didn't suck me back in for another season. But you can bet your ass if Sara comes back, I'll be watching to see if Shonda keeps her word.
