I'm torn on what to think about the scene where Callie speaks being referred to as a bit of a "doozy", why Sofia is "asking why mommy (Callie) is so sad", and also the fact that it addresses "Callie's status and where she stands with Arizona."
My hopeful side wants to believe that Callie is sad because she's spent the time jump between eps. 23 and 24 processing everything that has happened and everything they've been through together and her dialog would regard still loving AZ and wanting them to be a family again. Specifically Callie being sad and missing AZ and Sofia, her family. And the memorable moment being Callie breaking down to AZ and asking if they can try again. Cliffhanger...
Or
"Blindsided", as so many Grey's season 12 finale articles have stated, by AZ having someone new of her own, and a civility existing between AZ and Callie regarding Sofia, hence Callie being sad because they couldn't work things out. Callie's dialog: a breakdown to AZ, heartbroken because she lost what mattered to her the most, but she can't get it back, the Calzona ship: sunk. My heart would break all over again.
The "beautiful payoff" in the finale Kevin McKidd mentioned would be the civility of the two moms acting as a team, but as two separate, individual entities, cheering their daughter on at a soccer game or something. If that's the case, I can't even.
Well I think we can all agree why Callie has been sad. Even if you're not outright sad, kids tend to pick up on these things. So when Arizona hears about this, it may get her thinking about things. Nobody wants to see their child seeing the other parent upset or unhappy & I can imagine that no matter what has happened between them, Arizona would want to fix it because it's what's best for Sofia. I think that whole "impact" of the custody battle is obviously Sofia & how it's affecting her as well as them as a unit.
I can't see a blindside in which Arizona has had some secret love this whole time. And a beautiful payoff of them getting to a point where they were before would be a huge letdown.
