Grey Sloan - Nurses’ Station

“So, Sofia seems to like Penny,” Arizona began as she sidled up to Callie at the nurses station.

“Yeah?” Callie asked, surprised and a bit suspicious.

“She couldn’t stop talking about how much fun she had.”

Callie scrunched up her nose, “That sounds awesome.”

“Oh, it was. Super awesome. So I’m sure you’ll understand why Sofia has an iPhone now.” Arizona said cheekily.

“Arizona you didn’t.”

“Of course I didn’t. She’s six. But I can’t say I didn’t consider it, and we may have had an excessive amount of sugar, so if she’s bouncing off the walls tonight…”

“I will know why. Got it. And thank you.” Calle gave Arizona a once over. She looked really happy. She couldn’t help but wonder, “Is there someone?”

“Someone who?” Arizona asked. Oblivious.

“That you might want to introduce to Sofia?”

Arizona smiled politely, “Nope.”

“Okay. I mean, it would obviously be okay if there was someone. I’d like to meet them first of course, but I want you to be happy.”

“I am happy. Are you?”

“What do you mean?”

Arizona shook her head. She really needed to stop butting in.

“Arizona…”

Callie knew her too well. “You didn’t want to introduce Penny to Sofia. You lied to her about why to spare her feelings. And then you introduced her, which is fine and all if that’s what you wanted to do, but I know you Callie. And I can’t help but wonder if you introduced our daughter to your girlfriend to spare her feelings.”

“I wouldn’t do that,” Callie stated firmly.

“Good,” Arizona replied. Willing herself to just let it go and walk away.

Callie knew that wasn’t all. “You can finish the speech. I know you might explode otherwise.”

Arizona smiled softly at the ribbing and nodded, turning to directly face Callie.

“Don’t lie to her again. I know you hate hurting people. I know you put all of this pressure on yourself to give whatever you think the other person needs. But deep down, she’s going to know you’re lying. That something is wrong. And she’ll worry about all kinds of things that aren’t true and are likely way bigger than whatever lie you told to spare her feelings. So just…be honest. Even if you think you’re hurting her. Because I promise you, nothing hurts worse than the lie.”

Arizona smiled softly at Callie and patted her arm as she walked away.
-

“When did I lie to you?” Callie asked as she barged into the scrub room.

“Callie, I’m sorry. I shouldn't have said anything.”

“Just tell me. Because I didn’t…”

Arizona shook off the water and turned to face Callie, “You told me you were happy. And I knew, I knew you weren’t. And it made me crazy. I didn’t know what was wrong, how to fix it. You just kept doing all of these things, and resenting me more and more.”

“I was trying to make you happy.”

“I know! But how could I be happy when I knew you were miserable?”

“I wasn’t…”

Arizona took a deep breath, “It’s okay. You were finally able to share your truth. And that freed you to be happy. So please. Go and be happy.”

Callie turned to leave but then she paused at the door and turned back to her ex. “The only reason I was miserable is because you stopped being in love with me. And I thought…I thought if i just did whatever you wanted that I could make you love me again. But it doesn’t work that way does it?”

Callie offered her own sad smile and turned, letting the door close behind her, not realizing that she’d just given Arizona the shock of her life.

Arizona barged into Catherine’s office on the hunt for Richard, and found him locked in a passionate embrace with his wife.

“Thank God I found you. I need to talk.”

“Can it wait?”

Arizona finally realized what she’d interrupted.

“Oh, God I’m sorry. Yes, of course, I’ll just…”

Richard offered Catherine an apologetic look because it was clear Arizona desperately needed something.

“I’ll meet you out back. In five minutes.”

Arizona nodded gratefully and fled.

Ambulance Bay

“How could she think for even a minute that I wasn’t in love with her?” Arizona demanded as she paced back and forth by the emergency doors of the hospital’s back entrance. “That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. She was the love of my life. I changed everything just to be with her because I was so madly in love with her. It’s insane. You agree, right, it’s insane?” Arizona asked, finally stopping in front of Richard.

Richard sighed, “You were angry at her for a long time. And then you cheated on her. That hurts a person in a way I don’t think we can ever quite understand. I did my damnedest to make it up to Adele. I hope in the end she knew how very much I loved her.”

“What should I do?”

“That all depends. What are you hoping to achieve?”

“She needs to know that I loved her. She was my wife. Of course I…”

“There’s not always an of course about it. And you’re saying loved. Is that really ALL you want to tell her?”

“What are you suggesting?”

Richard just gave Arizona a look.

“I don’t. I’m not. We’ve been divorced for years. I’m seeing other people. She’s happy with Perfect Penny.”

“But do you still love her?”

“I don’t even know her anymore,” Arizona mumbled defensively. And then she sighed, “What should I do?”

“Nothing. Not if this is just about clearing your conscious.”

“And if it’s more than that?”

“Then you shout it from the rooftop and you keep shouting until she believes you.”

“What if she doesn’t care anymore?”

“Then we’ll go back to that bar and this time, you’ll go on a real date. And that one may not work out, so you’ll go on another. And eventually, one will click. And you won’t forget about Callie, but you’ll find out that there really is someone else out there that you can really love.”

Arizona started to tear up. “I just want her.”

“Then go get her.”
