I woke up the following morning to a mouth full of hair. I tried to wipe it out of my face, but one hand was held down while the other seemed to be on the other side of the bed. I moved my head back and saw Arizona’s blonde curls. She was holding onto my hand at the end of the arm she was laying her head on with one hand and her fingers were interlaced with the fingers of my other hand that was around her waist. I smiled to myself as I realised our bodies had taken up their familiar surroundings and had found each other. I freed my hands as gently as I could, trying not to wake the angel beside me. Just when I thought I had hit a home run, Arizona stirred.
“Where are you going baby?” she mumbled, still asleep.
“Shh, go back to sleep lady, I’m going to make coffee,” I whispered, soothing her hair back until she was asleep again. I couldn’t stop myself as I leant down and kissed her forehead, all my emotions flooding back on just how much I love this woman. I walked into the kitchen where Erica was watching the coffee brew.
“Morning,” she mumbled as I grabbed two mugs and stood next to her.
“Morning, you know it takes longer when it’s being watched,” I teased.
“Hmph,” she grumbled as it finished.
“Morning person I see,” I teased as Callie walked in freshly showered. It was still dark outside but our bodies were used to this from shift work.
“Morning Jordy, is Ari up yet?” she asked kissing Erica on the top of her head before sitting at the breakfast bar.
“She stirred when I got up, but she’s gone back to sleep,” I said smiling.
“Why can’t your sister be as bright as you in the mornings?” she asked, getting a glare from Erica.
“Because she’s old,” I said, the glare turning to me as Cal and I laughed.
“Cheer up babe, you’re not that old, not after that trick you did last night with your...” Callie started saying, winking at Erica.
“La la la la, I don’t want to know,” I interrupted loudly as I poured myself and Zona a coffee.
“Don’t want to know what?” Arizona mumbled as she sleepily walked into the kitchen. I handed her the coffee, which she took with a kiss on my lips before saying, “Thanks babe.” I looked at Callie and Erica who looked at me in shock.
“Uh, wake up Zona,” I said smiling, my lips melting from her touch.
“Sorry, habit, oh god,” she said as she realised what just happened. Erica and Callie just shared a knowing look but let the incident slide without comment.
We finally managed to get loaded into the car and away just as the sun was coming up. The first half hour of the trip as we got out of the city was spent listening to the radio quietly in the background.
“Jordan, I’m really sorry about this morning,” Arizona said as we hit the motorway.
“Zona, it’s fine, seriously. I know it was a habit,” I reassured her.
“Was there anything else?” she asked, blushing slightly.
“Besides waking up with you in my arms and reluctant to let go with a muttered ‘where are you going baby’? No, nothing else,” I teased.
“Oh god,” Arizona hid her head in her hands.
“Dimples, it’s fine!” I said laughing.
“What’s this?” she asked as she noticed the album lying on the floor of the passenger seat, picking it up. I had forgotten to take it out when I moved everything over to Erica’s.
“Oh shit, I forgot that was there,” I muttered as she started flicking through my memories.
“Is this you and Erica?” she asked pointing at a photo of when I was 10, taken just before Erica left me.
“Yeah, I was ten there, she was 21,” I smiled.
“I can’t believe I haven’t seen these before,” she said as she kept flicking through until she found the ones of her and me, “I can’t believe you’ve still got these.”
“I uh, guess it was pretty important to me,” I shrugged. She just nodded and kept looking at our happy times together.
By that evening, we were half way to pick up Max. We had spent the day singing songs and playing random road trip games. I found a motel just as our stomachs started grumbling. We had only eaten lunch from a gas station when I had to fill the car up earlier that day and were relieved to see a cafe/bar that was next to the motel. After checking in, we both practically ran into the cafe to order dinner.
“Ah, this is fantastic,” Arizona said sarcastically as a few men playing pool wolf whistled at us as we sat down in a booth and checked the menu.
“Well it’s not exactly the city Dimples,” I replied, groaning at the disgusting menu choices.
“True that,” Arizona groaned as well.
“So what shall it be?” the waitress asked.
“I’ll take the steak and fries,” I decided.
“And I’ll have a caesar salad,” Arizona scrunched her nose up as the waitress took off with our orders. I just laughed at her, causing her to beam and flash those dimples.
“Can we buy you lovely ladies a drink?” I looked up to see a couple of the guys from the pool table slightly swaying next to our table.
“Er, no thanks, not tonight,” I said as Arizona tried hard not to laugh.
“Aw, come on, just a wee drink,” the guy said again, sitting in the booth next to Arizona.
“Sorry mate, but you heard my friend,” Arizona said as the guys mate pulled him away from us and back to the pool table.
“Looks like he’s got a bit of a crush on the Arizona-master,” I laughed as she kicked me under the table, “you always managed to turn everyone’s head.”
“Shut up you,” Arizona scowled, her eyes giving away her playfulness.
“So I guess we won’t be asking them for a game of pool after dinner?” I teased some more.
“To have you thrash their arses? Might not end well dear,” she laughed. Our playful banter continued until our dinner arrived. We ate our meal in silence, both cursing under every mouthful we took.
After dinner, we just headed back to the motel to get showered and settled before sharing a bed again for the night. I let Arizona take the first shower while I tried to find out if the TV and cable would work. I had just managed to find a half decent programme when I heard Arizona scream from the bathroom. My instincts kicked in and I rushed into the bathroom before I could even think.
“Zona?” I said as I charged in. Arizona was standing in the shower cubicle, huddled into the corner, her face as white as a sheet.
“Sp..spider,” she said, pointing next to the cubicle door. I looked and saw a baby spider. Rolling my eyes at Arizona’s phobia, I grabbed the spider and set it free outside. When I came back into the room, Arizona was standing at the bathroom door with a towel wrapped around her, still looking horrified.
“It’s ok Zona, I got rid of it,” I said soothingly.
“I’m sorry, but I can’t stay here,” Arizona said, even though I knew it was coming. How many other motel’s had we deserted late at night because there was a spider?
“I know honey, come on, put some clothes on and we’ll go after I have a quick shower ok?”
“You can’t leave me out here on my own,” she said, her voice still shaking, “you have a shower while I get dressed, please?” I knew I couldn’t deny her, in case she worked herself into a panic attack.
“Come on then, but no peeking ok?” I teased, trying to cheer her up. It worked slightly.
“Nothing I ain’t seen before anyway,” she replied, turning her back while I undressed.
It was another three hours of driving before we found a motel that was half respectable, and by this time we were both shattered and exhausted. After checking in, we both fell asleep as soon as our heads hit the pillows. Five hours later, we were up and checking out, hoping to reach my friend’s place by that evening. Arizona was feeling much better today, excited about seeing Max and enjoying a couple of days hanging out before heading back.
“So Jordan, can I ask you a question, and you gotta answer me honestly, ok?” Zona said a few hours into our second day.
“Ok, can I choose not to answer if I don’t want to?” I asked back, noticing the seriousness in her voice.
“If you don’t answer, I will be left to make my own assumptions, so it might just be safer to answer anyway,” she smiled. I nodded at her, “So after I left, did you find someone else?” I took my time thinking about how to answer this.
“I had a few flings, if that’s what you mean,” I said, not mentioning they were all blonde haired and blue eyed.
“No serious relationships?” she seemed surprised.
“Not like you and Callie, no,” I said, slightly jealous.
“Oh, you know about that,” she said looking down.
“Yeah, Callie explained it to me. I’m glad though, means you weren’t hung up on what we had and you moved on, it’s good,” I smiled at her even though my heart sank.
“I didn’t move on, I tried to, but I couldn’t,” she said quietly, thumbing a few photo’s from the album I just noticed she was looking through again. I pulled the car over and switched it off before turning in my seat to look at her properly.
“Zona? Look at me honey,” I said quietly, taking her hand in mine. I waited until I could see her blue orbs through my green ones, “what are you saying?”
“I’m saying that I never stopped loving you Lilly,” she whispered. I gasped at the use of my shortened middle name, my pet name, the name she used during our lovemaking and when we were happy.
“I’ve never stopped loving you either Dimples,” I said bringing her hand up to my lips and kissing them as my tears spilled over.
“What does this mean for us?”
“What do you want it to mean?” I asked.
“I want to go back to how we used to be. You, me and Max. The three musketeers,” she smiled.
“I’d like that, I’d really, really like that,” I smiled back, pulling her hand to bring her closer. I placed a kiss on her lips gently, not wanting to rush anything while we were sitting in the car.
“But,” she said, caressing my cheek, “slowly,” I just nodded, showing that I understood, “and, you’ve gotta deal with this stuff in here,” she put her hand over my heart, “otherwise it’s not going to work.”
“You drive a hard bargain lady,” I smirked, covering her hand with my own, “but I promise, I will absolutely deal with it. Max and I can’t live without you any longer.”
