‘Grey’s Anatomy/Off the Map’ crossover unlikely

Shonda Rhimes is no stranger to crossovers - the TV creator has previously orchestrated them between her two hit shows, Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice. However, Rhimes is not planning to do the same for Grey’s and ABC’s newest medical drama, Off the Map, of which she serves as an executive producer.

“It would be beautiful to get to go there and sort of cross people over and see what happens, but the reality of it is they exist in two separate universes. And we wanted them to exist in two separate universes,” she tells TV Guide Canada from L.A.’s The Prospect Studios.

“One, Jason George’s character - Ben on Grey’s Anatomy - is now playing Otis on Off the Map and it felt like those characters are so different from one another. Otis is a recovering drug addict; Ben was romancing Bailey - who was like the perfect man for Bailey - and an anaesthesiologist. It felt like those things wouldn’t work. And also, Jenna’s (Bans, Off the Map’s creator) show has its own voice and its own focus, and it really deserves to stand on its own.”

What Grey’s fans can look forward to, though, is the addition of Rachael Taylor to the cast. The Australian actress makes her first guest appearance on Feb. 3 as Dr. Lucy Fields, otherwise known as Callie’s OB/GYN. Sara Ramirez teases that Lucy has a rocky start with Callie, as well as her hands full with both Mark (Eric Dane) and Arizona (Jessica Capshaw).

And, keep an eye out for her scenes with Dr. Karev (Justin Chambers), too.

“[Lucy] also has some interesting interactions with Alex, as Alex finds himself sort of being blocked by her on medical cases because he shows a side of himself to her that she’s not appreciative of in terms of him working with babies,” adds Rhimes.

Following Taylor’s debut will be Grey’s Anatomy’s first foray into real-time episodes, à la 24. On Feb. 10, look for Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) to take charge of the ER for exactly one hour.

Here Rhimes explains why: “We wanted to see literally what an actual hour of a doctor’s life was. There’s something very interesting to me about the speed of which doctors work and how fast they have to make decisions and how many patients they really see in an hour … and so we thought, let’s tell a real-time, one-hour story. Just follow one of our doctors and see what happens to them in the course of an hour.”

I saw this on Grey's Gabble, and have copied it from TV Guide Canada.  Let me just say that the Rachael Taylor job description is kind of worrying me.  I don't want her to cut into Arizona's work screentime as I love PEDS Arizona.  I also like Arizona/Karev as the go-to PEDS team.  I didn't really think that an OBGYN would do surgery, but I guess they do hysterectomies and cesareans at the very least.  Which suggests to me that the PEDS case in episode 14 is at least partially hers and not Arizona's...(Maybe Arizona's working on the baby post delivery?)
