So this happenedIf you have a subscription to Marie Claire, now might be a good time to cancel it. This is the most offensive thing I've seen come out of a women's magazine in a long time. And considering the state of women's magazines in the US and across the globe, that is saying something ( Read more... )

Yeah, that's the thing. I've been overweight all my life so I've heard this shit all my life. ALL. MY. LIFE. This is nothing new. It's the fact that it was done so blantantly and viciously on a forum such as this. I mean, even people who have never struggled with weight find that article offensive.

The apology doesn't fly with me, personally. It seems genuine only in the sense that she's sorry she put her foot in her mouth. The apology doesn't address the real problem. She understands that some people have a hard time losing weight because of medical problems and psychological problems? Ok, how about the people that aren't actively trying to lose weight because they are perfectly content with their bodies? They don't get an apology. They get no "points for trying." Apparently they still need to stay indoors. Her apology feigns concern for morbidly obese people and the possible physical/mental difficulties they face, but what she said was that watching an obese person CROSS A ROOM disgusts her, comparing them to heroin addicts. Her apology, genuine or not, does not remotely begin to make up for that type of venomous hatred. Trying to make others feel shame over their bodies is reprehensible. This is why women starve themselves, binge and purge, overeat, self-harm, become reclusive, or sometimes just kill themselves. Now more than ever we're seeing how much of an effect words have on people and the fact that she was allowed by MARIE FUCKING CLAIRE to use her position to suggest that the general population should not have to be subjected to seeing "fatties" CROSS A ROOM, let alone *gasp* kiss or be affectionate with one another is the grossest error in judgment I have seen in a long, long time. And despite her apology, I can't pretend I'm not glad to see so many people calling her out for it.
