I went to see The Ghost yesterday with my Mother. We decided to just have a random day out with a gorgeous meal at Exchange Bar and Grill (Jambalaya with Cajun Chicken for me.....*drools*) and then seeing a movie. It was a little awkward going into the cinema at first since it only had 6 people in it and it was these chatty old people (chatty as in give a running commentary) but after the trailers they quietened down.
I absolutely loved the film. Pierce was brilliant as a politician and you could clearly see he took inspiration from Tony Blair for his performance and Olivia Williams definitely had a Cherie Blair portrayal to her in the scene which had Ruth was being filmed/watched by the public, although Olivia of course has a lot nicer smile...and look in general. Just as Pierce is way better than Tony. By a long stretch.
Ewan McGregor's performance I really enjoyed- he went for this very subtle style of acting with minute looks and expressions in substitution for lines when he reacted to all the events happening around him. It was brilliant.
I have to admit though we figured out the twist before he was told by Amelia that it was in the beginningS not the beginning, that the previous Ghost Writer had said. That sentence makes absolutely no sense unless you've seen it, but I don't want to ruin it for any who haven't.
But an excellent twist and an excellent film. Mum was a little frustrated with how it ended for Ewan's character, but I think it was right as this was essentially all about a conspiracy and if there's someone there to say "I have the proof that it's all true!" then it becomes fact and not conspiracy. It was in the true spirit of government rumours and I loved how cold it was. Heartless and clean.
We also bought Avatar on DVD. I never had time to see it at the cinema, but since the DVD was half price if you spent £10 or more in HMV (Which we did on a Jennifer Anniston collection) we got it. AND LOVED IT. MY GOD how can anyone say this movie is BAD? And believe me have friends who hate it. It's Pocahontas, Fern Gully, and Farscape rolled into one- how can it not be good. And it so reached the environmental activist side of me. I admit I got all emotional in the scene where all the creatures of Pandora come to help fight the goodfight. I'm such a sucker for those sort of scenes.
