CHARACTER INFO

Character Name: Mana Walker
Canon: D.Gray-Man
Point taken from canon: Pre-canon. After death, but before Allen calls him back.

Age: ..Late Twenties? Early-Mid thirties? Somewhere.. around.. there...
Gender: Male

Appearance: A gentleman with close-cropped brown hair, possibly same colored eyes, a slight trace of mustache, and quite fatherly-looking in all. Rather tall/average height. He's been in the circus, so he isn't without any strength, but Mana isn't the most muscled man in the world, either. Can often be seen in a suit, a large overcoat, and a rather tall top hat.

Background: The Walker family's background and childhood is vague at most. Mana had a younger brother, whom we now know to be Neah Walker (a boy who would later be further known as the Fourteenth Noah). Their relationship is not touched upon other than a mention that Mana was the only person who was by his brother's side up until the point where he (Neah) was killed. Or, as they say-- murdered.

What happens immediately after Neah's death is not explained, but it's assumed that Mana mourned the death of his younger brother, but was much too knowledgeable about the Akuma to call his brother back. Mana goes on to join a travelling circus as a pierrot, a performing clown. Eventually, he becomes acquainted with a young orphan boy who usually brings food to the performers in the circus. They have a little talk next to the crude grave of Mana's performing dog, who had been beaten to death by a fellow jealous clown. The boy, Allen, is saddened by this, as the dog was not afraid of his left arm like the other people were. Mana admits that while he is sad, he is unable to cry anymore.

A little while later, Mana seemingly adopts Allen as his son, and the two of them leave the circus and begin travelling. A wandering Pierrot and a lost boy. But somewhere along this road, perhaps even before they left, Neah Walker's memories (or rather, the memories of the Fourteenth Noah) were implanted in Allen's head.

When Allen was about 7 years old, Mana was hit and killed by a stray carriage. This is the last thing he will remember after arriving in Kanna.

Personality: Mana is a generally easy-going man. He's a gentleman, he's polite, and he's respectful. He likes seeing children smile, and he doesn't like the ones who won't smile. He's rather calm and collected, from the few panels we've been given of him in the manga, but like any father, and like any older sibling, he can also be protective of those he holds close. Mana Walker is a Pierrot, a clown, a performer, an entertainer-- and as such, he is able to fake smiles, and is inclined towards antics that cheer others up, even at his own expense. (Of course, there's a limit to how far he'll go. Probably.)

However, it is also important to keep in mind that Mana Walker is not stable. Not mentally. It's even mentioned by Cross that, after his younger brother died, Mana Walker wasn't quite the same. He never showed it physically, never made any visible indication of it, because Cross (who was watching over Mana for the Fourteenth) couldn't tell, even with a golem spy following Mana around. It's unknown whether the Mana that Allen knew remembered what happened to his brother, or if he even remembered his brother in general. One evidence of this, although reasons could be given to explain it, is that Mana digs a grave for his dog (through dirt and snow and in the cold) by hand.

He is a gentleman on the surface, but he has his own share of grief. Grief that may never truly disappear, not even in death.

Abilities/Strengths: As a performer in a travelling circus, Mana does not have a large repretoire of combat skills. He's just a simple Pierrot, an entertainer who finds questionable joy in seeing happy, smiling children. Other than that, no abilities have been noted for Mana in canon.

Weaknesses: His mental stability is one. However, he doesn't show any sign of this, and as far as anyone is concerened, he is just a travelling entertainer.

Defining Quote(s):
"Keep walking forward." - Mana's 'motto'.
"There was only one person who was with the 14th up until the moment he betrayed the Millennium Earl and was killed. And that was Mana Walker." - Said by Cross Marian to Allen Walker.
"Mana, you and I are.. only a lost child and a Pierrot. And that's it. If not.. then what are we?" - Said/Thought by Allen.

Other: I headcanon Mana (and consequently his brother, Neah) to be from a relatively middle-class family. Not the richest, but not entirely poor, either. After Neah died, though, and Mana took to travelling, he became more acquainted with the less well-to-do side of life. He is satsified with having the bare necessities of life

I also believe that Mana would not be much of a religious man. Christianity may have been strong during the Victorian Era, but it's hard to believe in God when his brother has no choice but to be part of a 'family' that went against it.

I also think Mana would have minimal knowledge about some of the other Noah members-- their names, at the very least, given that his younger brother is (or was, since he's dead now) one of the Noah clan members.

Action Writing Sample:
[when the Hitomi flickers on, there's just the view of a dark brown leather boot nudging at the screen. in time, the boot retreats, and the face of a middle-aged man hovers overhead. he leans over, frowning slightly and curiously.

my word, what is this interesting little device we have here? so small and sleek, so seemingly simple, and yet there's an air of.. complexity about it. how odd.

Mana leans over to pick up something nearby-- a top hat-- and set it right on his head, adjusting it until it sits comfortably just above his ears. then, he crouches down, and eventually moves to a sitting position before the little device.]

H'llo? Is this working? [tapping a gloved finger on the screen, squinting slightly.] Well, I suppose it must be. Good evening, strangers! Ah, that is, if it is evening at all. I'm afraid I can't quite tell. But no matter!

[a small smile, and then he settles on a more serious gaze. this doesn't feel like the living world, because Mana is very much sure that he's dead. so, if this is heaven, or wherever the dead go after they've died, then Mana has a very important question to ask.]

..Has anyone seen my dog?

Third Person Writing Sample:

It's cold today.

The caravan is parked in an empty lot, things unpacked and set up, ready for another performance tomorrow. But right now, the after-show clean-up is being delayed. There's a hold-up of sorts. Cosimo has been causing trouble again, it seems. He always is.

Can't do anything properly, except when it comes to being rough and violent and jealous and bullying. The kind of man who loves attention to the point where he will destroy those who attract more of it than himself.

In Mana's mind, Cosimo is merely insecure. But regardless, he doesn't associate himself with Cosimo much, if at all. He practices, he performs, and he practices some more. Being a Pierrot is not his life's calling, but he doesn't know what is.

He knows what it was, though. Protecting his little brother. Keeping him out of harm when the other children poked fun at him and his odd ways-- but Neah had always been like that, a little 'out of it', so to speak, but Mana would never trade the world for another brother --and making sure that little Neah always had some reason to smile, in spite of the weather, the situation, no matter what.

But Neah is dead now. A mere pile of ashes that Mana had to bury in the cemetary closest to where his brother died. No marker, no words, no names. No would know. No one needed to know. What's done is done, it's done, it's in the past. And besides, did Neah not say he would return? Because Noahs don't die, even if they die, even when they're dead. He will come back.

So Mana will live until then, and wait, until Neah returns.

"Can't be too long now, old chap," he muses to the aged mutt lying at his feet. The dog is old, tired and weary, but he works for his food. Adorable, really, and wonderfully popular with the children despite his old age. He probably doesn't even know what Mana is talking about, but his tail flops a few times to acknowledge the words.

Seated as they are, they're like a pair of loyal pets, waiting for their master to return. This couldn't be any closer or further from the truth. The mutt has no true owner, merely a stray that was taken in. Mana, too, has no owner. He is his own man. Freed from the burden of providing for his parents, if they were still alive. Freed from the burden of worrying over his brother, who is now dead, who did not even need his brother's worry when he was alive. Free to travel as he wishes, light more smiles on the faces of those children.

But he waits, anyway.
