Commando shopping!

No, not shopping while bare-assed, but rather my own particular style of shopping--being a bargain commando. In the spirit of my resolution to learn all that the LA bus system has to offer, I took the Big Blue Bus to 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica. Apparently, it was Sri Lanka Day, go figure. I walked around, did much browsing through the ( Read more... )

My favorite brand of jeans is Habitual. I got my pair at Barney's in NYC, but I think Nordstrom, Saks, and a few other stores carry them--they're great jeans because they make your legs look long, they're not too low-waisted and sit just right on the waist, and the seam design on the back pockets is really cute (a Maltese cross). I also like Citizen of Humanity, Antik Denim (be forewarned, this brand's jeans don't have a lot of crotch room, but they do look very cute on petite women), James jeans (although the denim used by this brand is very thin, which makes them less durable and long-lasting), Paper Denim & Cloth, and Blue Cult. True Religion only has one style that isn't tacky ('Joey'), but the rest of their line is fugly (especially the ones that have stupid rainbow thread seaming and crap on the pockets, which remind me of little girl Osh Kosh jeans--it looks childish and cheap). I don't like Sevens and Joe's jeans (ugly washes), or Rock and Republic (kind of tacky-looking and run pretty large so they don't fit petite figures that well). Miss Sixty jeans just look trashy and are not flattering for women with petite bodies--my roommate's gf was wearing a pair the other night and I couldn't get over how flat and wide they made her ass look (terrible thing since she is quite skinny), also I hate the ugly seam design on the back pockets. I don't like Diesel for women either (their jeans for men are much better), but Diesel is pretty much the only designer-ish jean that comes in shorter inseams.

The only advice I can give you is to try on a bunch of different styles for the one you like best and then get the legs altered (Barney's, Saks, and Nordstrom will do it for an extra $15-20--it will look fine because you can have them reattach the hem, that's what I did with my Habituals). Since you'll be spending an ungodly sum of money for the jeans, regardless of what designer brand you go with (they'll all run from around $200-300 altogether with tax and such, maybe a little less, say around $150-$200, if you happen to catch a good bargain), it's really worth it to get them professionally altered. If you're petite and want designer jeans, that's pretty much the only solution.

That's what I was afraid of! I've tried almost all the others you mentioned except Habitual, and I'm so tired of sloppy-looking folded up bottoms. But I will totally try your suggestion to get the hem reattached. I get a lot of my pants altered, but jeans! I never thought that would work - always thought it would look stupid and obvious. Thanks very much for your input! I appreciate the time you spent.
