You know I had to, and stress the word had, watch the star wars prequels. A lot of people asked me why I went to the third one after the first two; Essentially they doubted my cognitive faculties and my long term memory. My general overall response was "Well, it's supposed be darker than the last two, and I mean it is the final evolution of Darth Vader. It is the last one and it won't suck." I didn't believe this, I knew it would suck, there was no way it could avoid sucking, but that is what I said. I didn't think it would suck as much as it did, but I should have known better. I never thought the first two could suck as much as they did, and every time I was proved wrong. I even watched the "first" two over again, in the vein hope they would not suck upon closer inspection.
Some people I know, would either say I am not a die hard Star Wars fan, or that the movies had redeeming parts that made them worth seeing. This is what I say in response. I'm one of those people that bought more than one star wars roleplaying hardback book. In fact, I had three, and that isn't even mentioning all of the tech manuals dictionaries and other universe books I acquired. I loved the universe that was created for star wars. Of the three prequels there is about thirty minutes (and that is probably being kind) of decent film material and I am including space battles. This is not debatable, its a damn fact, and anyone who does dispute it is bedding a plastic lightsaber on a regular basis. The creator of them had over a decade and millions of dollars to perfect these things and he failed. He is a gigantic failure. Yes I realize he's a millionaire a hundred times over, but let me explain my definition of a gigantic failure. I gigantic failure takes something that he succedded at and comes close to ruining it with a spectacular fuck up. Lets face it, no one is going to look at darth vader the same again, and if any of us have children we're going to have to essentially deny the existence of the prequals in order to show the originals (and I hope to god some day they un-specialize the special editions because that was short-bus-special).
All that being said, Serenity was the movie I knew would come out after the prequels were over. I knew someone was going to take everything nerds wanted in a sci-fi and just fucking do it. Serenity is a spectacular film. The actors were great, but it was all writing. Had any line not been given in that movie it's awesomeness would have been diminished incalculably. Even the things i didn't like about the movie had to be there for it to be as good as it was. I can't explain that, and if you've seen it you know what I mean most likely. It is what nerds deserve and it is what they should get and we shouldn't have to settle for shit stamped with a sci-fi logo and put on film. Thank you and goodnight.
