To Elsie, Memorial Day had always meant a day off school and a barbecue with her neighbors. It had meant another day to sleep in, another day for her to put off doing her homework, another day for her to spend flirting with boys at the pool instead of focusing on more important things. She had always been vaguely aware and vaguely grateful for the sacrifice of American troops, but since nobody in her family had served, it wasn't a very significant day.

When she was in college, Memorial Day meant watching the Rolling Thunder parade and cheering at all the middle-aged bikers and police and firefighter pipe bands as they walked downtown under the sweltering summer sun, then going off and getting shit-faced with her friends in the name of patriotism.

Now that she's moved on, in more than one sense of the word, and now that she's with Steve, Memorial Day holds a completely different significance in her heart. True to her promise, she'd dressed up a little, picking out something that was a little nicer than her normal wear but not skirting the line of something she'd wear to an evening event, and allowing Steve to coax her into coming with him to pay his respects to members of his family who lay buried at Punchbowl National Cemetery. She feels a little out of place, a little like she's putting on a farce, but if he wants her here, here is where she'll stay.

Steve could not express how thankful he was that she came along. He had done this Memorial Day thing with his Dad on several occasions but this year it was extra hard without his Dad around.

A soft cry got caught in his throat, and he grabbed out for her hand. He was usually more than skilled at keeping his emotions in check but today was different. A rush of emotions took over him and he was at a loss for words.

Elsie gladly held Steve's hand, letting him grip her fingers as tightly as he needed to, knowing that no matter how hard he squeezed, he wouldn't hurt her. Curling her free hand around the inside of his elbow, she leaned against his side a little, tipping her head to rest on his shoulder. Her heart was breaking for him, seeing him battling with his emotions like this, and she stretched up a little to press her lips to his jaw.

"Do you want to go lay the wreath down?" she asked quietly, her thumb brushing over his knuckles.

Coming from a long line of strong men had forced Steve to learn and calculate his emotions but now that he was the last McGarrett...It was difficult to control. He thought about the sacrifice his Grandfather had made for his country, dying in the worst possible way; leaving behind his son Jack, and his wife.

He nods silently before stepping forward to lay the wreath at the foot of his Grandpa's headstone. Of course it was an empty grave, but it was the thought that counted, right? He swallowed hard, taking in the lightly etched words:

STEVEN MCGARRETT
USS ARIZONA
FATHER, SON, HERO
DECEMBER 7, 1941

Elsie waits patiently for Steve to pay his respects, standing a few steps behind him as he lays down the wreath.

It takes him a moment to get over the tears threatening to make their way out of his eyes and down his cheeks. He takes in a deep breath through his nose and turns to put his attention back on Elsie.

He pulled her close to him, nuzzling their noses together. His voice was low and shaky, "I love you. Thank you for coming out here with me."

She winds her arm around his waist, tilting her face up to his and smiling gently at him. "I love you too, Steve. There is no place I'd rather be than right here with you, you don't need to thank me."

Steve is just emotionally broken in so many ways, he doesn't even know where to start but he loves how comforted he feels by her telling him those three precious words.

He just pulls her closer. Luckily he can't smother her to death, because that's probably what would happen, considering how hard he's hugging her right now.

He can relax, Elsie's pretty fucked up emotionally, too. In this they're a pair of bookends.

She curls her arms around him and leans against his chest, returning his embrace, feeling the ribbons and the pins on his chest dig into her cheek, reminding her just how special this man really is. "They would be so proud of you, Steve," she murmurs into his lapel, smoothing one hand up and down his spine. "They really would. I just know it."

Oh does Steve want to believe her. He wants to believe that he'd make his Dad proud, and his Grandpa too - even though they never had the chance to meet. Somewhere deep inside he feels like he's turning down the dark path his Dad went, looking for his Mom's killer.

He shifts from one foot to another, sighing heavily. "I hope so."

She shifts back a little, moving her hands up to his face so she can hold him still and force him to look at her. "I know so."

Pressing her lips gently against his, she strokes his cheeks with her thumbs. "In any case, I'm proud of you. And that's just going to have to be enough, mister."

That actually makes him crack a smile. He suddenly feels infinitely better having her here with him. Just her mere presence improves his moods tenfold.

"I'll take it." He grins widely down at her, leaning down to press a kiss to her lips.

She would feel so giddy and ridiculous if she knew he felt that way. Back to the exploding rainbows and glitter thing that she hoped she's grown out of.

"Good." She smiles against his lips, her hands slipping down to rest against his chest. "You look so handsome in this uniform. I feel like everybody's looking at us. All the girls, at least."

Steve would stand atop a mountain and scream it to all of Hawaii if given the ample opportunity, but for now he'll keep it under wraps.

He feigned innocence, "Are they? I haven't noticed." He paused a beat, "Though, I wouldn't blame them. You are with a designated war hero..."

Remember the whole exploding rainbows and glitter thing? Yeah. She wasn't kidding about that. It would be disgusting.

"You have too, you big liar. You know when people are blatantly eye-fucking you." She laughs at him, shaking her head fondly. "Oooh, a designated war hero, hm? I feel special."

"I have no idea what you're talking about. There might have been some sexting going on with the eyes, but no eye-fucking..." He couldn't beam any wider, honestly.
