Just a small reminder...

Sep 28, 2005 07:06

I can't help but feel like we're all losing momentum. Which is completely understandable -- we have busy lives, we have other responsibilities, we have our own problems. The news media has stopped barraging us with constant updates about the devastation. The gas prices are (mostly) going down.

And you guys, that is exactly the problem. America perpetuates its own culture of apathy, and that simply cannot be allowed to continue. That apathy and disconnection from each other is exactly why it took so long to get help to New Orleans, and we cannot just forget that and move on. We cannot allow ourselves to be distracted.

The relief effort is not over. Whether you see it on the news tonight or not, the victims of Katrina are still suffering.

So do me a favor, will you? It would make me extremely happy if each one of you would mention call_to_action in your journals today. Tell your friends about the mix CD. Bug them for postcards, journal entries or free-verse poems for the art book. Encourage them to join the MySpace. Put one of the buttons at the bottom of the post about your math class that you were going to make today, anyway. Un-friends lock it and see who's watching. You'd be surprised how much difference a little reminder can make.

Just say anything, something small, to remind people that we are still here. We are not stopping. There is still work to be done. You each have a unique voice and a unique readership, and you reach much further than this community can go. Thank you all for continuing to be here, but do not let that be enough.

Do not let people forget.
