Character Name: Saffron
Series: Firefly
Age: 28
From When?: Shortly after being captured by the authorities in the Firefly episode, 'Trash'.
Inmate/Warden: Inmate. Saffron is a trained con artist and isn't afraid to use her womanly wiles to get her way. Although she has shown remorse for her victims in the past, at the end of the day all that matters to her is pulling off the con. With a voice like honey, she could trick a man out of his pants - which is precisely why she is so dangerous.

Abilities/Powers: Saffron is a dab hand at picking locks and a master seductress. That's about it - although who needs super powers when you're Saffron?
Personality: Saffron could best be described as a sociopath. She is manipulative and cunning, and lying seems to come to her as easily as breathing. It's hard to know exactly who the real Saffron is, since she spends so much time building up personas to hide behind. What is very much apparent to anyone who encounters her, however, is just how hostile she can be. One wrong word and she'll be at your throat-quite literally. Whether this is simply as a consequence of her low tolerance for people who waste her time, it is unsure; it is more like, though, is that when she feels threatened or in any way belittled, she resorts to her first line of defence: attack.
Bounty hunters and con targets alike who have dealt with Saffron in the past will probably agree that Saffron can be sweet and seductive when she needs to be. She has played the innocent virgin, the doting wife and the elegant companion all with equal ease, and her best weapon is undoubtedly her ability to shape herself to whatever best suits her target. Her innate talent at playing the damsel only to turn on her mark when he leasts expects it is what has kept her in the conning trade for so long without being caught.
Don't be mistaken, though-whilst her particular brand of seduction might be tailored to scamming men, she's no fool when it comes to manipulating other women. Whether it's necessary to befriend a woman or slip into her bed, Saffron does both with equal ease and without hesitation, taking the time and effort to study just how to get under the woman's skin before making her move. That being said, she does show much more respect for strong women and has often feels a tinge of regret when a particularly long and complicated con comes to an end. Like any relationship, finally earning a woman's trust is, for Saffron, the climax; reaching that high point of intimacy only to take everything and flee often leaves her feeling rather empty and wondering if she'll ever have a connection with someone-male, female or otherwise-that doesn't culminate in her robbing them for all they're worth.
There are some positive things to be said of Saffron, of course. She is highly intelligent-a given-but not only is she smart and quick-thinking, she is also wise when it comes to reading other people's feelings which has been useful during her few, brief friendships. She has a sense of justice-however skewed-and will not con anyone elderly, young or infirm. Last, and perhaps most important, is her determination. Whether stubbornly pursuing a con or saving a life, Saffron rarely accepts failure if it can be helped. Although this has landed her into some serious scrapes in the past when she should simply have cut and run, it seems that this philosophy of never giving up has led to success after success in her long-and colourful-career.
Path to Redemption: She is highly motivated by money and power, so she's sure to be in on any plan which can get her either of those things. If someone were to show her that there's more to life than simply scamming people out of their fortunes... Well, who knows - maybe even this lost soul could be saved. Her biggest weapon is her sexuality and, when threatened, she has been known to try to seduce her way out of a situation. Any man who treats her as an equal rather than an object will instantly win her respect.
History: Saffron has made so many new names and lives for herself that even she has trouble remembering where she started out. There are a few things she knows all too well, however-first is that she cannot, under any circumstances, let the 'real' Saffron show through; second is that she has been so long on the road that she doesn't know if she could ever survive in one place without going crazy.
The conning started out as more of a way of life than a career; scheming and lying comes as second nature to Saffron which, as her mother might attest, all stems from having learnt to cheat her father out of a coin before she ever said her first word. As mentioned in her path to redemption above, Saffron's immediate reaction to being cornered is to rely on her body, the one weapon she can rely on no matter how tightly her hands are tied, which hints at a slightly darker past-although Saffron never admit it, her dealings with men as a younger woman were often terrifying and dangerous, and using seduction was the only way to protect herself.
During her first brief stint upon the Firefly-class vessel Serenity, Saffron clashed with the crew of the ship and, most interestingly, a member of the Companions' Guild resident on-board. Suddenly caught out in the middle of her con, Saffron did the only thing she could and attempted to seduce the companion, Inara Serra, by playing off of the innocent identity she had constructed to carry out the con. Inara later remarked that Saffron did such a good job of playing Inara at her own game that the woman must surely have had companion training in her past, which would undoubtedly explain just how easy it is for Saffron to wrap people around her little finger in any situation.
Although notoriously cold and contemptuous when it comes to her marks and anyone standing in the way of the con, Saffron has hesitated in the past-just once-which turned out to be her undoing. In her most recent con-her last-she succeeded in seducing a man into marrying her. Outwardly, their marriage was a happy one and Saffron has even admitted that her husband at the time, Durran, was a good man. Once the con started to go south thanks to a plethora of inconvenient circumstances, Saffron relied once again on her womanly wiles to attempt for a second time to seduce Malcolm Reynolds-whom she had enlisted, rather willingly, in her plan. During the seduction, Reynolds speculated that Saffron was finally cracking, and that she was truly in love with Durran. Ever scheming, however, Saffron managed to con Reynolds out of his clothes-quite literally-only for Reynolds and the crew of Serenity to turn the con back on her, trapping her and leaving her to be picked up by the authorities.
No one can be truly sure just how much of what Saffron said to Reynolds whilst seducing him was true, but the captain himself believes to this day that he has seen a chink in Saffron's armour, a sliver of her true, vulnerable self shining through. One thing is very much true: Saffron's career as a con artist was all going very well until she crossed paths with the crew of Serenity. Whether the motley assortment of space cowboys-thieves with a strange sense of honour-planted in her the slightest of doubts, or whether she simply lost her touch, Saffron's life changed irrevocably the day she met Malcolm Reynolds.

Fourth Wall?: No thanks.
Restrictions: n/a
Additional Notes: Whilst fourth-wall breaking is a no-no, it is okay to let on that you know about things Saffron did during her time on the show if you take the approach of telling her 'A little birdie told me...' or that she's quite infamous around your part of the universe (i.e. Earth).
You can mistake her for other characters Christina Hendricks has played, however only subtly; anything along the lines of 'Hey, don't I know you from somewhere? I could've sworn I met you in an office one time...' is fine.
