no, not THAT other team!...
we are interviewing people for an opening in our office. Everyone is invited and "encouraged" to participate in the interviews so I sit in also, ask some questions, and then fill out a rating card at the end. Now, i've been the interviewee at least 200 times (no joke! 9 times in one day on one occasion at NYU) and thought I generally knew how to be good. All that usual crap about how your strengths match the position strenghs, this company is the perfect fit for you and vice versa, eye contact, accomplishments, read up on the firm and ask good questions, a few jokes here and there, firm handshake - BAM, you're in! Well, now that i'm on the other side, I've found that none of that means crap to me in why i like some people and dislike others. Instead, some people have IT and some don't. The IT is some undefined combination of personality traits and physical characteristics. Completely unfair but true.
Jeff's (the singer's) quote from Almost Famous summarizes it well: "I connect. I get people off. I look for the one guy who isn’t getting off and I make him get off." The person who does that gets the job!
