She had been pondering what to do with the silver Maria had given her with. Some of the members were very bold with their silver and made it into lavish jewelry or pins. Narcissa was going with a more simple approach. She was adding another silver band to her wedding set. It wouldn't be noticeable to anyone who wasn't familiar with her jewelry, and if she received a message, she would just enlarge the ring to a bracelet to read it.
Narcissa paused from staring at her new ring and returned to walking through the garden. Most of the flowers were in full bloom, including her favorites, which were irises. She ran her hand over the petals and smiled softly.
"Have you seen 1001 Ways to Dismember Commoners? The house elves misplaced a copy."
The smile fell of her face and she glared at the ghostly spectre of her husband that was sneering at the fanged geraniums snapping at his feet and passing straight through.
"Lucius, why would I know where your damned book is?"
"Because you like to irritate me."
She sighed and fully turned to him. "If I wanted to irritate you, I'd have Draco bar you from the dungeons. You following me around nagging like an old maid is not my way of irritating you. It's irritating to me."
Narcissa started to move along the garden again but stopped suddenly when Lucius appeared in front of her. She was about to snap at him when she noticed he was staring intently at her new jewels. Her face became blank as she gauged his reaction.
"Where did you get that? It's no normal piece of silver."
So he could feel the magic on it, then. It didn't surprise her.
"It was a gift. I decided to put it with my other bands."
Lucius immediately back away. "I was wondering when you would do it. As far as I'm concerned, you should have joined them sooner. If I was still alive, we would have joined with their cause as soon as possible."
That made Narcissa angry.
"Well you are not alive, Lucius. Your last cause killed you. I am not so foolish to think I am untouchable. And I know that Draco may not follow, but he has a place. I will not force him."
She knew that was a lie though. Narcissa would do anything to protect her only son, unlike Lucius who had all but thrown him to the wolves.
"I do not think you will like his reaction."
"I don't care about his reaction. As long as he's alive, then I do not care. He can have all the tantrums and fits he likes. I will not see him die because he is too stubborn. I hope you just haven't damaged him more than I can repair," she snapped. "You may have ruined any chance I have to of ever getting him to see reason."
Lucius crossed his arms. "And I tried to take care of him as well. I secured a place for him in the Dark Lord's circle."
"There is no more Dark Lord, Lucius! That time has passed!" She huffed. "There is a new power that is more powerful and more united. You cannot even begin to comprehend what it is capable of."
His eyebrow went up. "I am glad that you have joined this group, but it seems you are being a bit hypocritical, Narcissa. Do not assume this new power is untouchable. And stop using Draco as an excuse."
"That's the difference between us, Lucius. You joined Voldemort for personal gain. I really am only protecting Draco."
Narcissa was in no mood to talk and stormed out of the garden, with Lucius glaring at her as she went.
"So I take it you don't know where my book is?"
His answer was a hex aimed at his head, which passed straight through. He wasn't about to tell her it tickled.
