"Tomorrow is Gwen Jones' birthday."
Jonathan looked up at Hazel at her words, an eyebrow raising. He waited for her to elaborate, but she just continued to look down at her books. He waited another moment, before dropping his quill, giving her his entire focus. "Was there more to that statement?"
Large blue looked up at Jonathan, blinking innocently. "It was just something I read in her file. Why do you have her file?"
Sitting forward, Jonathan shuffled a case file and replaced it in its folder. "It's related to the Jennings case."
"Her personal file?"
"It's related to the Jennings case," he replied again. "If you know the players in a case, you know the case. You need to know everything about everyone. All the time."
"What if you can't?"
Jonathan looked over at her. "You research them."
"And that's why you have Gwen Jones' file?"
"Of course."
"Of course," she repeated, looking back down at her books.
He watched her begin to study again in earnest, taking copious notes. Her statement had been innocent, a simple observation from a file she'd read. Nothing dubious, nothing suspicious. Just something she'd taken note of.
However, she'd reminded him of something he'd been aware of, but pushed to the back of his mind. It was her birthday tomorrow, Gwen's birthday. Why this meant anything to him, he wasn't sure, but as his eyes found the papers in front of him again, something pulled at his thoughts.
It didn't matter. It shouldn't matter. It didn't matter.
"Don't you have a class to go to?"
Hazel looked up at him, a small smile on her face. "No. It's a Saturday. No classes."
"Hmm," he said, frowning. "Well, then, how about you take a lunch."
"That sounds like a good idea." She gathered her things, pausing to look at him. "Did you want to join me?"
Jonathan shook his head, "no, I'm fine." As she was passing through the door, he called her name, making him pause. "Thank you."
Hazel grinned at him, shrugging her shoulders slightly as she left.
Sighing, Jonathan sat back in his chair, running a hand over his face.
Bloody trainees and their thought provoking thoughts.
