Believe it or not, something I overheard/learned at work today helped me study for my bio midterm this afternoon. I was in the library doing some last minute studying before the exam, and I was looking at the part of my notes about blood glucose regulation by insulin and glucagon. And in my notes I had used some rather ambiguous arrows pointing up and down to indicate....something. I wasn't quite sure what though, lol. I didn't know if the DOWN arrow meant that insulin is released when blood glucose levels are low, or if it meant that insulin is released to lower the glucose levels (a.k.a. when glucose levels are high). And vice-versa with the UP arrow I had put next to glucagon. But, after looking at the ambiguous arrows with frustration for a few minutes, I remembered something...this morning Dr. Michael was talking to a client right in front of where I was working. The guy's dog (named Kate) is diabetic, and had passed out earlier in the morning. Dr. Michael said that he tested Kate's blood glucose, and that the level was very (almost dangerously) low. He also mentioned that the insulin shots that Kate gets every day work to LOWER glucose levels. Hooray! Mystery solved and there were actually 2 different questions on my test that dealt with that fact :D
