Sounds like a great series I should try. I'm curious to hear what you see as the differences between urban fantasy and paranormal romance (in the titles with romance as a significant storyline, at least). I have a lot of trouble deciding what is urban fantasy when I try to categorize my own reads (for example, C.E. Murphy's Heart of Stone).

I haven't read HEART OF STONE, so I can't make the comparison, but urban fantasy does not, by any means, have to have romance in it. It doesn't have to have vampires or werewolves or faeries in it either--it's just a fantasy that takes place in an urban setting.

Paranormal romance doesn't have to take place in an urban setting, and it involves a romance plot with paranormal creatures.

Obviously, there are books that are mis-shelved, and I've read some urban fantasy series that have installments that are more paranormal romance than urban fantasy. It can be a fine line between the two, but one of my pet peeves is people considering them one and the same genre, because urban fantasy is more than the Buffy-esque books we enjoy today. Charles de Lint is actually the grand-daddy of the genre, and I'd laugh at anyone who called his urban fantasy "paranormal romance."

So glad to know it's good--I've been looking forward to it, and haven't gotten to pick it up yet. Will come back and read your whole entry (I just looked to see that it was another Must Have) and potentially make real comments later.

Hey, less than a month later, and I'm back - great read, and I agree with just about everything you've said here. Tate got annoying, and I almost cheered out loud when Cat knifed him.

Only thing I would add is that I wouldn't be too surprised if Spade started taking care of Denise. Not that I expect her to move past Randy right away, but hey. I can always hope for more romance. :)

You give me hope. I had just picked up Halfway to the Grave and was about to chuck it into Ye Olde Circular Fyle because of the enormous spates of telling and the dialogue infodumps.

I'll forge on.

I came to your LJ through urbanfatasy and
just wanted to thank you for your great reviews! I am now very interested in the books you picked up as top10! Only sad thing is that since I live in Japan, I cannot qualify for your givaways *tears*

I also like the Nighthuntress novels and was happy to know the third book is good as ever. I hope it gets translated into Japanese soon, so that I can share it with my friends!!

If I can find a cheap way to ship to outside North America, you can bet I'll do a giveaway for all of you all overseas! :)

I can't remember that from the first book, but it's been a while and I didn't notice it in this one. That or I like these books so much I don't care. That's possible too. :) telling doesn't bother me unless it's TOO chatty. Rob Thurman's first person gets that way a lot. Oh, and a more recent example of first person being too chatty is LIsa Shearin's MAGIC LOST, TROUBLE FOUND.

I picked up and read "One Foot in the Grave", so I'm happy to see a positive review from you about the sequel. :)

I might just have to start insisting on getting Chapters gift certs for presents now. :P

I always thought Chapters was the Canadian version of Borders, but wherever it is, it definitely isn't in East Tennessee. :)
