Poll: Journal Style
I've had this review journal for three years, and this whole time, I've kept it a free account. At the start, I never knew just how long I'd keep up the book reviews, and once I got under way, I had no real reason to change the set-up.
But I decided to give it some serious reconsideration, and in the midst of this reconsideration, I learned that LJ was holding their permanent account sale. I've already got a permanent account for my personal journal devilwrites, why not do the same here, with a journal I WANT to keep around no matter what happens in the future? The permanent gives me all the perks of a paid account, and a few extra, so I did it. Merry Christmas to me.
But now that I have all the LJ themes and styles in the world to choose from, I have to be careful. Since I've been on LJ, I've learned that reading light-colored text on a dark background is a helluva thing, which is why I chose the colors I did and was fine with the comment page being the LJ default, black text on white background.
But now I have the option of customizing my comment pages to match my journal style. The perk of this is that when someone comes here to comment from a community, they won't think they're still commenting in a community, a complaint I've gotten more than once. The downside is that limits me on my styles and color choices (and boy, I like some dark color schemes), because nearly all of my reviews use an LJ-cut, which takes you to the comment page. I don't want to handicap my readers, and using a dark journal style will do just that.
The compromise is to use a sexy journal style but keep the colors readable. Or I could say the hell with it and do what I want (which won't always be reader-friendly) or I can pick the styles I want but keep the comments section the LJ default.
Since all of you are the ones who read this thing, I thought I'd get your opinion. What's going to be easiest for you? I promise if I choose a customized comments page I won't go overboard with dark colors even though I'll want to, and if I ever do goof, you can just leave a comment telling me you can't read the entry easily. And those of you who came here from communities, it would be helpful getting your feedback. So please, fill out the poll, and if you have any comments, drop me a note.
I will add that there's some styles out there I love, most from the "Style Contest," but whose customized comment pages aren't working properly at the time I selected a style. I'll also add that I really wish there was a way to customize the way my tags are displayed, because I have too many, and many of the themes lump them together and make the print TINY. Ugh. Edit: D'oh! Found a way to make my tags appear as a list! Score!
