I enjoyed the book for all the reasons you pointed out. And I had the same issues. Plus one biggie: the main character's emotional upheaval in losing her wife doesn't work for me because we barely ever got to know the wife. She's played out as a secondary character. We don't care enough about her to care about what happens (avoiding specifics for those that prefer to stay spoiler-free). So at the end of the book, when the main character is a mess, I feel very much like I was TOLD his feelings, versus experiencing them with him.

Does that make sense?

Oh and...

Good afternoon! ;-)

TOTALLY makes sense. I was in the same boat as you. I wanted to feel more for this guy, and I never could. Oh well. :)

Good evening! (I should say good night, but I think I'm going to be up for a while. *winks*)

Yep - same problems. But I loved Buckell's descriptiveness. I wonder if his original draft had more with the wife.

I also felt like the subplot with the kid got cut short.

I'm up too. Trying to get through more of this fracking essay.

*nods*

The stuff with Jerome felt rather extraneous. I know, though, his website as a thing for "deleted scenes" so that may answer some questions?
