I don't care how "sexy" the upstairs penetration is, it's irresponsible for an author to even remotely write something like that, especially when it's a book marketed towards women.
I was on board with your review till I got to the spoilers and read about the rape scene. I don't know if I could get past that. That would really disturb me. I'll be interested to hear your opinions of the other books to see if they're worth picking up.
Hope you don't mind if I friend you. I love your reviews.
Not a problem at all. :) I've done a crapload of reviews in this journal, so feel free to browse. And if there's a particular title you're curious about, just ask. No guarantee I've read it, but I'll help if I can. :)
I'm thankful that you warned me about the whole rape scene thing, because otherwise, I might have picked this book up. While I don't object to authors portraying a rape (it's something that happens and needs to be talked about), I do object to authors doing what you say she does, which is "enjoying" the experience.
Especially since it seems to feed into this idea that the woman actually wanted it/deserved it/liked it - and thus, was "asking" for it. And I just don't put up with authors who don't recognize that and recognize the harm it does.
I'm probably not going to read this book, since it sounds like there's not enough good about this novel (the oversexed vampire hunter thing's been done, yo) to outweigh the rape scene - but I wanted to thank you for the warning. And for saying "hey, that's not right!". Because it isn't.
The funny thing about the book is that there ISN'T a lot of sex. The scenes cut in and out (before and after) and we're told the narrator's got an appetite by Avery, but we don't see it for ourselves, if that makes sense.
But yeah, that's why I put the warning in there, because I know some people are even more offended by that than I am. Granted, if I'd known, I wouldn't have picked the book up either, but I wasn't pissed enough to put the book down.
If you've got it, go ahead and read it. I still think it's worth the read, and I'd like someone else's opinion on the same scenes that gave me the creeps. It'd make for a good discussion, eh?
I'll put it after my next required read, then. I'm taking a break from the genre stuff by reading... other genre stuff (Mark Henry's Happy Hour of the Damned which is so freaking hilarious), but I'll get back to LA Banks after this one.
Glad you're liking Caine. Be warned: if you like the book, the way she leaves them, you immediately want the next one in the series. I swear, it would have worked out better for my sanity if I'd discovered her series a few years from now, or maybe on the tail end of the series if she's going to have one. I might have to kidnap her dog and hold it ransom until she agrees to quit wasting time on that vampire YA series and feed MY needs, dammit. ;)
I keep hearing good things about Henry's book, but for whatever reason, I keep putting it off.
I just finished the Caine. I liked the way it ended, plan on getting more, but don't have the NEED to get the next one right away. It ended nicely. :) And I hear good things about that YA series of hers. :)
You really nailed it on the head! I finished the book and just felt like I needed a shower. You're a braver soul than I, since I'm not interested in book two at all.

Anyway, thanks for the warning.
Can't wait to hear what you think of Caine's stuff (squee - next one's out in a week!).
