My beef with this book?

"But where's the plot?"

Ho, hum, like you I expected a lot more than I got. And, knowing me, I wanted more of that "alternative lifestyles" bit that I heard a lot about, and didn't get much of that, either. -sigh- But you're right; I think this book isn't as good as she can write. I saw her read out here, though, which was fun, and she's a nice lady.

Hmmm - I was wondering if I should read her book "Swordpoint" (which is suppose to be really good) but I think I'll get some other secondary-world fantasies under my belt first...

Read it. This review in no way reflects Swordpoint, as I clearly haven't read that one. :)

What other secondary-world books are you wanting to read?

Mainly the ones you have or the ones I was recommended to when I asked for fantasies that had really good worldbuilding.

I plan on reading the best Star Wars books out there, too - because I love it too much to not indulge in my fav. sci-fi saga, lol.

China Mieville does AMAZING work with world-building, so I'd highly recommend his PERDIDO STREET STATION. Also Kay Kenyon's BRIGHT OF THE SKY (which is science fantasy). Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head for amazing world-building, but there's definitely others. :)

Ah, there was a time I could brag that I'd read every single Star Wars novel out there, but I haven't read one since the last movie came out, even though I've been buying them. You might find the book review section of theforce.net to be very useful, and I believe they offer a chronology of the books so you don't get too mixed up. :)

She recommended me numerous times on Amazon.com so I added her on my Wish List, but never bought her book. None of the libraries near my have it, either. But thank you for this rather thorough review.

And yes, the Kushiel series is absolutely fantastic! :D

Give her a go, but you may want to start with Swordpoint which I hear is much, much better.

I might one day, but not until I get through the ridiculous stack of books on my shelf. :)

Sounds like a book I'd be really frustrated with. While I've loved semi-sequels where previous main characters show up as supporting characters, I would be very put out if the new main character's voice was drowned out by the previous main character's voice/goal. Sounds like it happened that way in this book. :/

Btw, if you're still on a urban fantasy kick, have you ever tried Jim Butcher's Dresden series?
