To Serve the Wheel
Allegory E-Zine, Fall 2007
Writer: Michael J. DeLuca
Genre: Short Story/Fantasy

It's not intentional that I end up choosing online stories that deal with religion and the disillusionment of. DeLuca's story is an interesting one. It settles you into a world and just when you get comfortable, the rules change just a bit. And once you get comfortable again, the rules change once more, leaving the characters to make the decisions that define them.

Other than saying this story's about disillusionment, it's hard to describe it without giving it away. It's a story about coming from darkness to light, both literally and symbolically. As always, DeLuca has a wonderful touch with his prose, and his images spring to life right off the page. The end came a little fast for me, given the imagery of the setting, and the story sports a few wing-bats in the text that I suspect is the fault of the zine (that or my monitor), and I'm not sure why they chose to underline stressed words _this way_ instead of using the code and underlining them this way.

But that's me being picky. :) It's a good story, and DeLuca's prose is always worth reading. If you want to check it out yourself, simply click the title of the story at the top of this entry.
