Flash Reviews: Gladstone, Valente, Zahn

Mar 06, 2013 00:00

I'm going to try something new and rather distressing. For a long time, I knew that when it was time to start pulling away from the book blog so that I could spend my time doing other things, like working on my own fiction, that I'd have to change the way I did reviews. Quite honestly, I dread sitting down and putting my thoughts on paper, even ( Read more... )

I figured most people didn't read the whole thing, because often I'd get into spoilers, and most people want to avoid spoilers anyway, so....

Glad this works for you!

I really like the quick and dirty review option, to get it out quick while its fresh.

Given I really dislike Jemisin, can you make any other good comparisons for Max Gladstone? I think I might like it but Im not convinced :)

Hmmm... there were elements that reminded me of a steampunk Harry Potter. :)

Seriously, if you can get your hands on a sample, that's your best bet. The two authors are very different, but the subject matter is similar. And seriously: how often do you read about lawyers in fantasy that use magic to argue their cases?

It's a very unique book. :)

I plan on buying Scoundrels when it comes out in paperback because I can't resist the cover shot of Han, Chewie and Lando.

I loved Catherynne M. Valente's two fairy tale books, but I tried reading the first novella in Myths of Origin and I had absolutely no idea what was going on. Six-Gun Snow White sounds interesting but I would definitely want to see an excerpt first before I committed to reading it.

One thing to keep in mind regarding Myths of Origin: all of THAT stuff is Valente's EARLY work. It's just been collected in one volume for easy access. If you liked the two fairy tale books, you're going to be just fine here. Her early work is very, very surreal, very unlike what she's been doing lately.

I like these quick reviews and I wouldn't mind seeing more in the future. Quite frankly, I'm amazed that you've kept the reviews going as long as you have. Whatever format you choose to write them in, I'll keep reading them.

I am too, to be quite honest. I really am a glutton for punishment...
