I read this years ago. Yes, yes, yes, to everything you said. I enjoyed the book and the writing was gorgeous but I just could NOT suspend disbelief for the pregnancy bit. It bugged me for the whole rest of the book.
Glad I'm not the only one with issue regarding the pregnancy. I appreciate the role of it in the story, that in and of itself was a thing of beauty, but the author was asking for a LOT there.
I thought this was an incredibly ambitious and unique book. Mae is not at all a typical POV character for an SF novel, which I thought was wonderful. I enjoyed watching how her relationship with the other villagers changed over time. The pregnancy did not bother me overmuch. I was happy to accept it being magical realism and did not worry too much about it not being compatible with reality.
I'm glad it worked for you! I know that's how it's MEANT to be taken, but I've been listening to way too many podcasts that talk about womens' bodies lately, so my brain is not primed for that suspension of disbelief. :)
