Book List: 2012

Jan 10, 2013 00:00

Welcome to the 7th annual book list extravaganza! That's right, calico_reaction has been reviewing books on LJ for seven years. Insane, right? One of my annual traditions here at calico_reaction is to post a comprehensive list of every book I read and every book I didn't finish during the previous year. This is not as painful as it sounds. This list is updated EVERY time I finish reading a book, so posting it at the end of the year isn't that big of deal. The order, of course, is most recently finished first. The list goes down from there, including title, author, date it premiered, genre, number of pages and format, and finally, a link to the review. It's a long list, yes, but for those of you who are interested (or bored enough), I hope you enjoy.

But first, I wanted to share some statistics, because I kind of love those:

Total novels read: 108

Last year, I read 110 novels. So I was down a bit, but anything over 100 is good with me, especially since I devoted my summer to reading Hugo nominations.

Total novels started but not finished (DNF): 3

This is impressive. Last year, this number was 7. I think that my self-imposed rules of ignoring giveaways and other freebie opportunities really helped me focus on books I was interested in. It's not a foolproof system, of course: one of those DNFs was a book I'd bought on impulse and regretted later, one was a freebie from LibraryThing I'd received in 2011 and it was overly hyped, and the other was part of an ongoing series I was enjoying, but the latest installment was just BORING. I also had a few that probably should've been DNFs, but I powered through them, because I'm insane.

Total novellas, novelettes, and short stories read: 26

A lot of these were due to the Hugos, and I don't regret the effort. I found a lot of great stories and authors I'm interested in following. But even if you take the Hugo stuff out of the mix, I would've still read 13 pieces of short fiction. That ain't bad.

Mount TBR Books versus THE WORLD

51 of the books I read were for the Mount TBR challenge, meaning I'd gotten them prior to 2012.

53 of the books I read were new purchases, bought in 2012.

And lastly, 13 of the books I read were borrowed from others.

Reading Habits Broken Down by gender, genre, etc.

I got crazy and decided to really track what I was reading, genre-wise, and who was writing it. Please note these stats ONLY apply to books: not graphic novels or individual short stories. Here are the basics:

  • Books written by men: 22
  • Books written by women: 74
  • Science Fiction: 39
  • Fantasy (not including urban): 33
  • Urban Fantasy: 19
  • Horror: 6
  • Other: 3
  • YA Novels: 20
  • Short Story Collections/Anthologies: 2
I'm not sure what to glean from the figures, other than that they are interesting. I knew that I read more women authors than men, so that stat doesn't surprise me. But for some reason, I was under the impression I read more science fiction than fantasy, and that's true, if you ignore the urban fantasy numbers. However, combine the two and you've got 39 science fiction novels to 52 fantasy novels. Ooops? I guess it makes sense, as I was working on the rough draft of a fantasy novel last year, but I'm still somehow disappointed in those stats. Just have to fix them for next year!

The rest, it is what it is. I didn't expect horror to be very large, and I tried really hard this year to be SUPER PICKY about the YA I was reading, and that served me well. The "Other" category includes one historical fiction, one memoir, and one story about a girl with cancer. So that's that.

Rating Breakdown

  • 10 - My Precious: 2 books
  • 9 - Couldn't Put It Down: 15 books
  • 8 - Excellent: 18 books
  • 7 - Good Read: 49 books
  • 6 - Worth Reading, with Reservations: 32 books
  • 5 - It's a Gamble: 14 books
  • 4 - Problematic, but Promising: 5 books
  • 3 - Not My Cup of Tea: 2 books
  • 2 - Below Standard: 2 books
  • 1 - Waste of Time and Money: 0 books
  • No Rating: 1 book
One thing I want to in 2013 is not be so stingy with my more extreme ratings. While I definitely don't think any book I read last year truly warranted a "Waste of Time and Money" (the book really has to piss me off to get that rating), I definitely think there's always room for improvement when it comes to my rating system and making sure I'm being as honest with myself about a book as possible. The "No Rating" is simply because I knew the author (we went to grad school together and I was working with her in a professional capacity) and felt it was best not to even attempt to cross into the "rating" line in that regard. :)
And that's all I've got for my 2012 stats. I'm sure I'll do it again next year, because for some reason, breaking things down into numbers and categorizing them is just so interesting to me. If anyone's done the same, even to a smaller extent, I'd love to hear how your reading stats shook out!

And now, for the infamous LIST:
