And February's nominations are in! We had a total of 23 people make 63 nominations, which is up from last month and therefore makes me happy! Here's hoping that the longer I post these polls, the more of you decide to boss me around and tell me what to read.
Being the second month, I didn't realize just how much rolling over the previous month's tallies would effect the selection. What I figured would happen is that the books that scored high last month would roll over and score high again for February, and we'd cycle through those books until they were read and others took their place. And I'm right…. kind of.
Here's top three books, as directed by the total number of nominations for the year to date:
1) Lois McMaster Bujold's Warrior's Apprentice with 8 votes
2) Geoff Ryman's AIR with 8 votes
3) Michelle Sagara's Cast in Shadow with 6 votes.
So, same remaining titles
left over from January, right?
But let's just focus on the February totals for a minute. Here's how it shakes out:
1) Geoff Ryamn's AIR with 4 votes
2) Wen Spencer's A Brother's Price with 4 votes
3) Lois McMaster Bujold's Warrior's Apprentice with 3 votes
4) Dru Pagliassotti's Clockwork Heart with 3 votes
What does it all mean??!?!?
I didn't take the time to compare email addresses to see if people change their votes from January to February. But it seems that with Bujold losing the tie last month, people either gave up or assumed that last month's votes would be enough to carry it over and win February. Hell, that's what I thought would happen! I figured everyone who voted for Bujold in January would vote for Bujold again, giving that title a total of 10 votes and winning by a landslide.
But that didn't happen. Once more, we have a tie for the highest number of votes.
So what's a girl to do? How can she pick between yet another tie for first place?
Because I said that I would use the total number of nominations to date to determine the winners for the year, I gotta stand by that. But given we have a tie, I decided to zero in on the February nominations alone, and let's face it, more people want me to read AIR in February than they want me to read Warrior's Apprentice.
So with that in mind, your February Dare to Me is….
AIR: Or, Have Not Have (2004)
Written by: Geoff Ryman

Synopsis
Chung Mae is the only connection her small farming village has to culture of a wider world beyond the fields and simple houses of her village. A new communications technology is sweeping the world and promises to connect everyone, everywhere without power lines, computers, or machines. This technology is Air. An initial testing of Air goes disastrously wrong and people are killed from the shock. Not to be stopped Air is arriving with or without the blessing of Mae's village. Mae is the only one who knows how to harness Air and ready her people for it's arrival, but will they listen before it's too late?
So how will it work? In February (or maybe a tick before), I will read this book. You, dear readers, are welcome to read along, but you don't have to. After all, this is YOUR dare to me. I'll announce MY dare to YOU in February, so don't worry. :) But for those of you who want to follow along, please note, I may post my review of this any time during the month of the Dare, so if you do want to read, read it on your own time and your own pace. You know I always welcome discussion at any time, so even if you're "late," it's all good!
Now that February's decided, what about next month? Well, February's nominations will carry over to March's tallies, but for March, you get a fresh start to nominate any book you want. I won't be surprised if some of the books that weren't picked end up getting selected over the next few months, but who knows? It's all up to you!
