Yes, Klara and Gradi use people to gain their objectives. In an odd kind of way, though, Roberts is saying that it's still a man's world, because both women rely on wealthy and connected men to achieve their goals. Gradi, of course, rises to her own powerful position. However, whether male or female, anyone who single-mindedly pursues a difficult goal is going to end up sacrificing a personal life to do it. When men do it, they are considered high achievers and rewarded for it. When women who have families do it, they are accused of neglecting their families ( ... )

It's been so long since I read this that I remember very little save for a few points to argue with, like the language. :) But I do remember Slater playing a very bit part in part three, and I agree with your other comment that Gradi played quite a small role, considering.
