A few reasons I do this. One, I indicate the format of every book I read, be it hardcover, mass market, Kindle, or whatever. Just do. :) It also helps that if I quote something, you at least know what format I'm quoting from. But also, lots of people request ARCs from publishers and then never get around to reviewing them. Between that and the FTC crap about transparency, I like stressing where and how I got ARCs. Normally, I'd give the disclosure because I received it for review, and since it's rare that someone's reading an ARC that they didn't get directly from the publisher, that's why I stress it so much. :)
I remember reading On the Edge when it first came out and loving it a lot. I have this book in my TBR pile, but just haven't gotten around to reading it yet. (I'm so behind on reading, OMG.) I really hope I can get to this sooner rather than later and see if my thoughts on it end up matching yours!
I barely remembered William from the first book until he started talking about Rose, and then I was like, "Oh yeah..." but I don't remember how his story wrapped up in that first book.
