October Round-Up

Nov 06, 2012 00:00

Here are the reviews posted during October. Please note, this is not a comprehensive list of books I read in October, but rather the books I had the time to review before month's end.

1) Seanan McGuire, Ashes of Honor: Couldn't Put It Down
2) Jo Walton, Ha'Penny: Good Read
3) Richard Kadrey, Devil Said Bang: Not My Cup of Tea (DNF)
4) Rae Carson, The Crown of Embers: Good Read
5) Ilona Andrews, Gunmetal Magic: Worth Reading, with Reservations
6) Ann Aguirre, Outpost: Worth Reading, with Reservations
7) Laura Bickle, Embers: Worth Reading, with Reservations
8) Sarah Langan, Audrey's Door: Problematic, but Promising
9) Catherynne M. Valente, The Girl Who Fell Beneath Fairyland and Led the Revels There: Excellent

Total Number of Books Reviewed: 9 books.

Total Number of Books Read: 8.5 books, considering that .5 was a DNF.

September was quiet, and October was just as quiet, really. Some of these books took me longer than I would've ever expected, like the Valente, but for the most part, I don't feel like I slacked or anything, so that's a good thing. :) Though most of these books came from my 2012 TBR rather than Mount TBR, which was kind of a shame, but oh well.

Favorite: Based on ratings alone, it'd have to be Seanan McGuire's Ashes of Honor.

Most surprisingly enjoyable: Jo Walton's Ha'Penny, simply because I wasn't head-over-heels for Among Others, and while I liked Farthing, I didn't rush out and get this sequel. But I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed Walton's style in this series, as well as the details of her world-building.

Biggest disappointment: Richard Kadrey's Devil Said Bang. I've enjoyed the hell out of the series, until now, which is a shame, but this book started and dragged like nobody's business, and there were a few historical inaccuracies that made me lose faith in what was happening, so I just put it aside.

Mount TBR Stats: Mount Vancouver is accomplished with 25 books, so now it's on to Mt. Kilimanjaro and 50 books! Where am I on this noble quest? At this moment, 44 books (which includes 1 DNF).

Reading Goals: Now that I've caught up on my 2012 TBR pile, I can now start rotating between Mount TBR and new books. I'm glad to get back to this, because Mount TBR has been beckoning me. :)

Anyway, what were YOUR favorite reads from October? Which books did you love most? Which books, if any, were huge disappointments? Got a review list? Lay it all on me! :)2012's resolution is to RECEIVE no more than 72 books a year, which means if I want to keep a monthly status, no more than 6 books a month! October was MUCH better than November, especially since two of the books I received were birthday gifts! I'm still happily within my annual goal. This brings up my total for the year to 47, with it breaking down like this:

January: 6 books
February: 4 books
March: 4 books
April: 2 books
May: 5 books
June: 4 books
July: 4 books
August: 5 books
September: 9 books
October: 4 books

I'm still well within my resolution, so that's a good thing.

1) The Killing Moon by N.K. Jemisin (Kindle)
2) The Girl Who Fell Beneath Fairyland and Led the Revels There by Catherynne M. Valente (Amazon); REVIEW HERE
3) Range of Ghosts by Elizabeth Bear (Birthday Gift) **
4) The Testament of Jessie Lamb by Jane Rogers (Birthday Gift) *

** = already read, review forthcoming
* = reading now

So I definitely behaved this month, especially considering two of the books were birthday gifts. The Valente was a pre-order, and the Jemisin was a sort of impulse decision because they were selling the Kindle version SUPER cheap, so I nabbed it, which made since, considering the Jemisin is our November book club read! So yay for behaving!

For November, I have Cherie Priest's latest and Laini Taylor's latest coming as pre-orders, and those are the last of the pre-orders of the year, so that opens up my ability to impulse quite a bit. Well, except for Christmas… who knows what I'll get for Christmas? At any rate, I can sit down and order a few things without feeling too bad, now that we're at the end of the year. :)

That's my October. How'd you all do?
