I love ghost stories, but most of the ghost stories I've read are short stories rather than full-length novels. And then, I thought of a book I've read numerous times, an October staple for me, and a classic:
The Hound of the Baskervilles, by Arthur Conan Doyle.
Technically, it's a mystery, not a ghost story or horror story, and pretty tame by modern standards, but the atmosphere evoked in this book is fantastically eerie, even without the threat of a mythical hellhound wandering the sparsely populated countryside.
Yes, it's a later addition to the Sherlock Holmes series, but you actually don't need to read any other Holmes stories to get it, and even among Holmes fans (and yes, I'm one of them) there's an ongoing argument as to when exactly in the series' timeline this story happens.
It's also the best Holmes story Doyle ever wrote, and I'm not the only one who thinks so.
It is an older book, sure, but I think we have to give some love to the classics now and then.
