I love this story and was emotional at the end. Liu's novella is also excellent and well worth reading, though it didn't quite have the same emotional punch as "The Paper Menagerie."

I'm looking forward to the novella, but thanks for keeping my expectations in check! This story was quite the doozy, emotionally. :)

I enjoyed this one too. His attitude toward his mother made me squirm uncomfortably, which I think was the intention. I also really liked the final resolution.

As someone who has her own mommy issues (but for completely different reasons), I both related and squirmed. This mom didn't deserve the scorn.

I teared up at the end and personally liked it best of all the other noms. I tend to vote for things that actually make me emotional though.

That's not a bad way to vote! Looking forward to the other shorts though, since the two I've read so far are so utterly different from one another.

For sure! I actually read all of the stories back to back as it's easier for me to personally evaluate what I liked and connected with versus the other stories eligible. I found in the end what was most important to me was emotional resonance. I lacked feeling emotionally connected to all but two stories so it made the decision much easier in the end.

I went ahead and read the other three today. Took notes, like the geek I am, but I'll be posting those reviews within the next few weeks.

I'm curious which two stories you didn't emotionally connect to?

I loved this one. Beautifully written and made me so sad for the mom.

Absolutely. I just wanted to hug her and ask her to make me my own magical tiger!
