She's published by Baen. Of COURSE her covers are vile. (I agree btw. The absolute worst has to be Miles Mystery + Mayhem with lots of that signature bumpy font and mauve/silver reflective gubbins Baen art goes in for) Checking out the cover art - the french ones are rather wonderful. If only I spoke french..

That cover ALONE is the reason I don't want to collect this series in omnibus format! I'll just get the individual titles from Paperback Swap!

Heh. No, that's not the worst. The worst was the original cover to Warrior's apprentice, the one LMB calls "Elena's combat nightie"

Oo, interesting to read your take. The vorkosigan series, and Baker's Company series, are the 2 that I had to buy in hardback despite cost and bulk - could not wait.

Especially interested by your reaction to Cordelia, and to the way she is presented to the reader.

I burned out on Cordelia a little later on as all the other chars in the books kept saying how awesome she was so unanimously that it felt a bit marysue, but Miles is a joy particularly in his early messedup years. W Apprentice is the funniest most accessible book - conjobs and mercenaries! but Memory, quite late in the series, is as moving as Connie Willis at her most heart wrenching, though to have that effect on the reader, it's dependant on one's having experienced the series-so-far.

I hope you continue to enjoy this.

I'm gonna take it a book at a time and read at my leisure. I'm looking forward to the experience!

I love these books to *pieces.* I've read them over and over; there's something calming and strengthening to me about them, and if I'm having a really shitty time Cordelia or Miles can almost always make me feel better.

Did you know almost all of the Vorkosigan books are available online for free? Quite legitimately, I mean, here.

Oh. My. God. They've got everything!

I did not know this was available, but dang if this won't be helpful in the future. Thank you!

Be aware that Memory somehow got left off the disc by accident :(

I got my disc when I bought the hardback copy of Cryoburn. It was taped into the back cover. I was unaware it was freely avaliable on the web!

Yeah. When I have money again, I'm totally going to buy a $4 copy of Memory on Webscriptions.

WICKTORY! *does happy dance*

If you had NOT liked Bujolds SF I would have had to ask serious questions about your sanity and grip thereof :)

Great review - am posting a link on the LMB mailing list.

Just be aware when you read the first Miles book it does feel a lot like a first book, it has its weaknesses, but persevere because it gets a LOT better. Memory is my favourite of the series tho Brothers in Arms is also a very powerful story. Please read more Bujold, it is worth it!

I've heard that Shards of Honor and Warrior's Apprentice were published about the same time, so it makes sense they were written roughly around the same time as well. Thanks for the warning, though, that'll be useful if my brain starts having fits. :)

And don't worry, I'll be reading more. :)

I wasn't a huge fan of Shards of Honor (it was okay to me) but I did like Barrayar and Cordelia's shpping trip.

Love the Miles series and looking forward to your review of them.
