April 2011 Round-Up

May 11, 2011 22:25

Sorry this is late, but it's been a busy few weeks for me and I've barely got time for reading, let alone the extra stuff! Here are the reviews posted during April. Please note, this is not a comprehensive list of books I read in March, but rather the books I had the time to review before month's end.

1) Patrick Ness: The Knife of Never Letting Go: Worth Reading, with Reservations
2) Antony John: Five Flavors of Dumb: Must Read
3) Carrie Vaughn: Steel: Worth Reading, with Reservations
4) Lyn Benedict: Ghosts & Echoes: Must Read
5) John Scalzi (ed): Metatropolis: Worth Reading, with Reservations
6) Lauren Beukes: Zoo City: Good Read
7) Robert Charles Wilson: Spin: Couldn't Put It Down
8) Chris Wooding: Retribution Falls: Not My Cup of Tea (DNF)

Total Number of Books Reviewed: 8

Total Number of Books Read: 7

Not a great month for me, that's for sure! But I read Heinlein in April, and that took some time. Let's blame Heinlein for the low read/review count, shall we?

Favorite: Antony John's Five Flavors of Dumb. Such a great read. I couldn't put it down!

Most surprisingly enjoyable: Robert Charles Wilson's Spin. I was really dreading this, but the book is delightfully compelling.

Biggest disappointment: Chris Wooding's Retribution Falls. I was expecting so much more after loving Poison, but it didn't deliver and I couldn't keep reading.

Books added to the FOR SALE pile:

Chris Wooding's Retribution Falls (2 copies: one ARC, one trade paperback, SHIPPING ONLY)

All prices are negotiable, especially when buying multiple books. :) The full sale list is here and if you're interested in any of the titles, please comment here or email me.

So what were YOUR favorite reads from April? Which books did you love most? Which books, if any, were huge disappointments? Got a review list? Lay it all on me! :)April was pretty manageable in terms of book buying, especially since a lot of freebies came my way! Here's what I added to my library.

1) Shady Lady by Ann Aguirre (Barnes & Noble) REVIEW
2) Blood Law by Jeannie Holmes (free from Dreams & Speculation for review)
3) Retribution Falls by Chris Wooding (free from Dreams & Speculation for review) REVIEW
4) Deathless by Catherynne M. Valente (Amazon)
5) Children of Scarabaeus by Sara Creasy (Amazon)
6) After the Golden Age by Carrie Vaughn (Amazon) REVIEW
7) The Hidden Goddess by M.K. Hobson (free from Dreams & Speculation for review) REVIEW
8) Black Wings by Christina Henry (free from Dreams & Speculation for review)
9) Tattoo by Kirsten Imani Kasai (free from Dreams & Speculation for review)
10) Gods & Monsters by Lyn Benedict (free from Dreams & Speculation for review)

Six out of ten books were free, which is pretty darn good! Of those I haven't reviewed yet, I'm looking forward to, especially the Valente and the Creasy. Definitely a good acquisition month!

How'd you all do in April?
