I suspect it reminds me too much of Drizzt. Heeeeere's Drizzt! A lot of people in our age group LOVE THE HELL out of him. I'm not much for game-tie-in novels, even if the game is a pen and paper RPG, but I think Drizzt would have annoyed me regardless. "OH WOES IS MEEEEEE I IS THE ONLY GOOD MEMBER OF A SPECIES OF EVIL ELF VAMPIRE THINGS, I WUV A HUMAN I WILL OUTLIVE BY CENTURIES AND THE WHOLE WORLD WILL HATE OUR BABIES. ANGST ANGST ANGST."
As to the second book, I like the bird. I want to know when Angelina Jolie joined a death-nun cult, though. I just don't think I like the style chosen for the human attire. This may all be Drizzt's fault.
However, Drizzt's flaws appear to have no actual relation to the book you just reviewed, but the appearance puts me off. I will however read it anyway.
I'm as you know a very large Martin fan, so I'm sure I'll have something to say about the influence of ASOIAF. I don't mind influence all that much so long as it's done well. Dragon Age heavily references A Song of Ice and Fire--the plot's core idea, the Grey Wardens, is just about ripped from the Nightswatch whole cloth--but I still found the storyline entertaining and generally well done when I played it.
I am somewhat concerned about the heroine. I've been known to pitch books across the room (figuratively) when the heroine annoys me, but we'll see how it goes.
You think the woman on the second cover looks like Angelina Jolie? Just based on the chin? Or are you referring to the cover of the third book? :)
I can see your point in terms of comparison, but I don't think you'll have trouble here. People aren't that pitiful in this book, you just feel really bad for them.
Which heroine are you referring to? The one I didn't like or Piro, the only female with a POV?
I love, for instance, Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn. But its heroine makes me want to go on a rampage. Tad Williams has apologized for her so I forgive him.
Understand that feeling. Often, it's not that I think the art itself is bad, but it just doesn't jive with me. I couldn't stand the original art for the George R. R. Martin series! And I still can't stand the art for the Robert Jordan books.
She's DEFINITELY not a POV. I would've killed her if she had been. :-/
Also, in regards to the wonkiness of the world, I've gotten a lot more accepting of that after hearing Martin's explanation of why his world has a weird climate pattern. It went something like this:
"It's not natural of course, I can't figure out any workable mechanic for a world having such a wobble that the seasons would be unpredictable and overly long. And if it could happen it would probably kill everybody. But that shouldn't get in the way of a good story. I think a wizard must have done it."
HA! I never questioned Martin's weather patterns for some reason. Here though, just because of where the landmass lays in regards to the equator, I started wondering, and all because of the equator! If I hadn't seen that on the map, I would've never questioned it!

The one you didn't like. Ugh. Glad she's not a POV.
