I recently read something similar, a UF book which had an awesome ending but a rather blah first 3/4. Still, the ending reveal sold it that I'm considering reading book 2 if it comes out. Hopefully with a faster, more intriguing build in.
Rec for you: Adam-Troy Castro's Andrea Cort series. First book is "Emissaries from the Dead." Think SF setting with a mystery component and a brilliant if (mentally) tortured JAG who's half detective / criminal investigator, half lawyer. Beautiful cover as well imo.
Completely random funny thought: The ERASMUS System is a sprawling realm of slavery, smugglers, spies-and constant, creeping decrepitude.
Hahahaha. Where did that system go wrong from its lofty ideals? Even funnier considering that Solarians are known as Saints ... which apparently someone thought the inhabitants of Erasmus were going to be!
I don't the the Erasmus system was ever meant to be considered peaceful. It's only the Solarians, but the "saints" that come into the system are trying to make a better place. much like missionaries do in the real world.
The form of slavery in the Ersamus system is an interesting take, and a frighteningly logical one. If you read it, I can't wait to hear your thoughts!
I read a sample of that and just couldn't make myself pick it up. Which is sad, because before reading the first chapter? I was planning on picking it up.
Hahaha. Yes, I had a similar reaction. Except I'm sort of anal so I have to finish books I start. Instead, I just read really slowly. (This extends to movies and animes which is why I'm painstakingly working my way through Kanamemo)
That's why I don't know if I'd rec the book. The ending really is pretty cool but getting there is a bit of a chore.

What was the UF book?

UF book was Rob Thurman's Trick of the Light. I should have put it together... there were enough clues. Maybe you'll put it together before the end?
