It definitely would've made a horrible movie. I didn't care for the screenplay material at all. I could visualize those scenes and think of nothing but cheese.

I responded to talkstowolves comment. Not sure if my remarks made any sense, but the problems are worth noting, but not--I think--obsessing over. At least, I don't think they should make or break the book. Now, if this book had been written in today's day and age? Oh, there would've been fury on my part.

I can see your point about the Mary Sue example, but for whatever reason, I can't swallow that pill in this case. Mostly because we hear she isn't attractive (especially at first), and her music is average. It's not until she's in the act of performance that the something magical happens, and even then, it's not always a sure bet. But if you couldn't relate to her, regardless of her seeming like a Mary Sue, that definitely makes for a problematic reading.

Though it raises a question I see brought up in UF a lot: if the genre is (especially the Buffy Lit) on some level wish-fulfillment, why SHOULDN'T the heroine be special in some regard, and then once we establish what makes her special, where's the line? Or is the very ACT of being special somehow immediately qualify her for M.S. status?

Curious about the band sections: what about them bored you?
