You have a collector's edition. The book went out of print as soon as it was released, rights reverting to the author, courtesy of WOTC. Killed. Hard covers were later pulped without telling the author first and giving him a chance to obtain some of them.

Really? Wow. I think Amazon's still selling the hardcover, though I could be wrong.

That's so crazy, but not surprising. WOTC hasn't announced any 2009 titles either.

must be what Amazon has in stock somewhere, because thousands were pulped. Walter only found out the stock had been destroyed when he tried to order more copies. He already knew about the reversion, of course.

So what started all of this? How did it happen?

I'm not the horse's mouth, of course. I talked to Walter at Readercon because we had met through a mutual friend. My understanding is that WOTC bought this as a series, this book and at least one sequel, maybe more. Walter has the sequel drafted, told us about a 3rd that's being outlined and worked on.

Walter had something about the lack of a pb in his newsletter: http://www.walterhunt.com/blog/?p=474 last November.

So who knows what was in the minds at WOTC or their parent company? Anything I say is just speculation based on what I heard said at Readercon.

Thanks!

That's got to be so frustrating for the author. I didn't realize he was planning a sequel either. I hope he finds someone willing to publish. For his sake more than mine, as I didn't care enough about this book to continue as a series, but that's me. :)

My understanding is that it was at least a 2 book deal. I think the sequel was set considerably later in time. Makes one shudder, though, as a writer. It could happen to anyone.

(late comment is late)

My understanding is that WOTC killed the whole "Discoveries" line off.

That would not surprise me.
