No kidding. I think there's something to be said for the power of the emotional component versus the intellectual one.

So this would be an early work of someone you say has the power to write a classic?
This is said in spite of the hatred you show for his passive voice, the "it was as if", and the other choices of vernacular in the book?
Your flameing review has gotten me more interested in reading the book than anything,as I cant see how you can say "it could be a classic" in one breath, and poor acid over the rest of the work in the next. Your list of likes is far outweighed by the didnt likes, and seems based around specific plot twists, and ideas, rather than the actual delivery.
Classics do both things, they capture the reader, and impart the new idea. I want to read this book at this point just to see where you are coming from.

BTW, dont get me wrong, I read almost every review you have published, and you've been pretty on the mark about most things, but this is sort of a fine line.

Oh, there's definitely a fine line, no doubt. There were times when the author's style didn't bother me at all, which is when I let myself consider the book more favorably because the style wasn't getting in the way, but then it'd get in the way, which is always unfortunate.

It's the author's debut NOVEL, which I didn't mention in my review. He's only published one other book since which I haven't read, and he's known critically for a slew of short stories. My commentary about classics reflects the potential the book has, but maybe more so--and I should make this clearer--the potential the AUTHOR has to pen one.

If you're interested, definitely read it. The book itself is weak, it's the potential the book had to be strong that lingers, if that makes sense. Give it a shot and come back! I'd love to hear your thoughts on it!
