Ooooh, boxing. I can get into that. I just read Carey's new book Naamah's Kiss (coming out this summer), which is set in the same universe as the Kushiel series only many generations later, and it was good enough to inspire me to go read the Kushiel books. (I'll post a review on my journal eventually.) But this sounds more interesting, frankly, so maybe I'll do this one first.
You know, I'd forgotten you were a Carey fan (I remember you're a Martin fan though!), but now that you mention it, I do remember. Did you read any of her Sundering series? I never saw very good reviews about it.
I think that's a fair and accurate assessment, especially about villains. Developing villains in the way you describe is exactly what I've been encouraged to do in my various workshops like Odyssey and the Seton Hill graduate program. That's one of the reasons I get frustrated of villains who are bad because they're BAD. There's no meat to the story.
I still don't know if I'll ever check out the Sundering series, but I'm glad to hear a perspective from someone who enjoyed it!
