Briggs' website has some interesting commentary about how the author was involved with the tattoos-on-the-cover process that may either make you feel better about it or make you more annoyed...
I'm sure sales are a huge, if not the only, reason they do so, because they think they can move the copies. Again, I don't wish any ill-will on the author, but I think changing the format of a series mid-way through is ridiculous, and this series isn't the only one that's done so.
Yeah, I cry about the hardcover! I know I know, it's not about ME, and Briggs deserves money for her work, but dude... MIDSERIES? And I'm already wondering what to do next year when book 5 comes out - also in hardcover. Sniff.
Oh and the cover - every time my husband sees any of these books he goes: whoa. And I say: but this character doesn't dress like this in the books and there's hardly a mention of tattoos! But he still likes the covers. I like the covers too (gorgeous), but I dislike them not really meshing with Mercy in the books. Oh well.
The thing with the covers, and I complained about this in my review of IRON KISSED, is that they're created with the male audience in mind (much like women's magazines like COSMO), even though the books TARGET the female reading audience. I don't get that. I'll NEVER get that, no matter how much people try and explain it to me. I'm not saying I was to see Mercy in dingy, dumpy coveralls on the cover, but the covers for the UK? Those work just fine.
