Weekend update.

Jun 23, 2008 14:05

Okay here's what I did the past three days/nights. I'll place them behind the cut to save your Friends Pages. ;)

Widespread Panic returned to The Orpheum Theater for the second consectutive year in the interesting section of downtown Los Angeles known as The Fashion District. I love this band if you couldn't tell already or I failed to mention it before. I've been seeing them ongoing for 11 years and have seen 50+ shows after this weekend. I'll get an exact count later, but it might be something like 52 or 54 shows now. I can't remember!

I arrived on time for Friday night's show, but stayed in the Broadway Bar just a little too long before I realized the line to get in the theater was backed up as far as it was. They were being very picky about what you could or couldn't bring into the venue. Far more meticulous than last year. I even had to take my credit card/DL#/ATM and money out of my pockets. THey made me throw away my Ice Breakers Liquid Ice mints though! I guess they thought those would turn out to be LSD or some shit. Go figure...no fresh breath that night for me. About the only thing I didn't get was an obligatory reach-around.

I walk in 13 minutes after 8pm and missed JB playing and singing an acoustic rendition of Old Joe solo. I wish I could have caught this, but as I mentioned...I arrived on time, but lagged at the bar and had to go through what felt like a Customs Check-Point. I missed part of the second song which was Surprise Valley with the whole band accompanying JB to start kicking off what would be a great 3-night stand in Los Angeles.

They followed that up with a segue into Bear Gone Fishing. Not often they play those two songs back to back as they appeared on the album 'Til the Medicine Takes. The treat I liked aside from that pairing was when they busted out Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here. That is a rare treat indeed and wonderful to hear. I haven't heard them play that song live myself and in the past 8 years its only been played 9 times. For the final song of the first set they played None of Us Are Free and even wheeled out Solomon Burke who sang alonside the band.

The second set brought on some of my favorite tunes and they kicked off with Pigeons and a song I was hoping to hear titled Second Skin (love this song). Another classic was Rebirtha followed by an awesome B of D. By the time they belted Bust It Big I was already overjoyed by the second set song selection.

The encore was the icing on the cake as they returned to play End of the Show and followed that up with a rocking Last Dance. Truly a righteous Friday night's worth of Widespread Panic. Here's the set list:

Saturday I went back to the Orpheum for a second helping of WSP. I wasn't disappointed by getting there in time to make it past the Event Staff blockade and have plenty of time to have a beer in the beer garden inside and smoke a cancer stick or two. This time I made sure to bring an unopened package of cinnamon  Certs. I have this thing about having fresh breath in a crowd. I won't  stink of you don't stink, mkay. Note to those who lack a good shower and deoderant. Please, stay the fuck away from me!

JoJo took the stage for a solo acoustic tune titled Tipitina. The nice thing about this song, aside from JoJo's finger, frenzied piano playing and singin' was that it had never been played live before. Nice treat to be greeted with upon taking my seat. The band followed after the song and started into a nice Thought Sausage and then Tickle the Truth, but here's where I get really happy. The next jam they played was another of my all time favs by them that they cover called Can't Get High.  Other highlights from the first set are Good People, Use Me, Ribs & Whiskey a smokin' Better Off with a nice Sunny drum jam intro and another fav of mine called Junior.

Chainsaw City opened the second set and then they served the crowd up a nice Machine->Barstools and Dreamers complete with a Satisfied rap by JB. The nest song was another of my most favorite songs ever by Panic. They treated the crowd and much to my delight  with Jack! How I love that song! Blackout Blues followed and Tie Your shoes. The set ender was Going Out West to remind everyone seemingly where they were playing. ;)

The encore was nice, not quite as awesome as the previous night, but Tiime Waits, This Part of Town and Action Man summed up Saturday's aural feast. Made me wish I was going to the Sunday show, but other engagements I had wouldn't have me returning to the Orphuem for the 3-night run closer. Set list follows:

Sunday I took my son with me to watch the Dodgers host the Indians in the rubber game of the series. Cleveland took the first two games, both which had gone into extra innings and made me a very sad, angry and downcast spectator on the television and iPhone updates during those first two games. Just to be brief, the Dodgers scored all of their 4 runs in the first inning off of Byrd before the first out was made and failed to tack on more after that.

Byrd pitched a great game, better than Chad Billingsly who started for the Dodgers, but Chad walked away with the win due to the following back-up of our bullpen. Saito was able to record his 11th save for the season after blowing the save in Friday's game. Good for him and for us to maintain a 1 run lead after the 3rd inning for a win.  That's what I like to see and if you are a sports fan you know the feeling of seeing your team win as you are in the stands at the stadium. :)

Today as I type this we are only 3½ games behind Arizona in the Western Division which is saying a lot considering how great they got off at the beginning of the season. Those D'Backs buried everyone in the division and have now hit their offensive struggles. The Dodgers haven't been playing that great lately and are once again faced with mulitple players on the Disabled List with injuries. Most missed is Rafael Furcal. :(

Still in spite of the bad offensive hitting of the Dodgers they've managed to dig in and stay competively close to the Diamondbacks to close the gap once they find their rhythm. I look forward to that and hope it comes soon and stays long. I want this team to win the Division title and head to the Post Season.

After getting home from the ballgame I was able to relax for roughly 90 minutes before I was back out the door to see this fantastic pop/electronic band from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. Belanova is their name and though they've been around for 5 years or more I first took notice of them while on vacation with my family during a cruise to Mexico. My stepson and I walked into a Puerto Vallarta Bubba Gump's restaurant so I could get myself a cold beer and the music they were playing came to a song that both my son and I thought had a nice beat. I asked who they were and was told Belanova and made a mental note to look them up once I got back home.

Anyway, I did find two of their recent cds at the local Latin music store and have loved listening to them ever since and vowed to see them when they would come play SoCal. They played a number of shows down here, but I had to turn down a couple of them due to not being in town or because I had some other event to go to. Heck...it was a tough choice for me to skip the 3rd night of Panic. I mentioned earlier how much I liked Panic, but I *had* to see Belanova and it being their final show in the States was a must. I wasn't disappointed either.

Denisse Guerrero is such a ray of sunshine. Immensely cute and super-adorable and sexy to boot. Hey, I'm a guy and I'm allowed to fawn over gorgeous and charismatic female singers. :P I was impressed by their energy and good vibe feelings they radiated from the stage. Definitely a fun show! I wished there was another so I could go again! Next time I'll see more than one.

I wrote down what they played, but there were two songs I wasn't sure of and that's pretty good seeing as I only have 2 of 3 of their albums and they sing in Spanish and I understand very little. :P Here's my set list for last night:

That was my weekend. it was great fun and exausting as well. I'll barely have my batteries recharged before heading out the door to head off to Pittsburgh for Anthrocon. Cool thing is when I get there I have tix to see the Pirates host the Yankees at PNC Park that Wednesday night. That's going to be fun as I love to watch baseball and see ballparks I've never been to before.

As for this last weekend, highlights were getting a kick ass signed and numbered poster for the WSP weekend run of shows and a nifty new Panic shirt with the Orpheum on the design. I also caught up with two friends I hadn't seen for something like 8 years or more when I used to see all sorts of hippie, Deadhead related shows. Sometimes it just nice to have pleasant surprises. :)
