. . . their own masturbatory fantasies which may or may not involve rape by a large number of wild dingoes.
You just had to bring the dingoes into this, didn't you? {; )
On a more serious tack . . .
If I may offer a different opinion?

Now, while there is no way that I could possibly condone the actions and words of certain deeply homophobic members of the religious right, it does not necessarily mean that the people who spew this bullshit are gay themselves.
Passion spurs from an internal struggle.
Absolutely. But that does not mean there is a universal basis for such a deep display of religiously-founded passion. It is true about what you say, that many people who speak out against same-sex love are themselves gay/lesbian/have sexual identity issues. But others are more products of culture, family, and a deeply corrupted species of religion. From a very early age (and regardless of what their ultimate sexuality is) they are raised to believe Leviticus 18:22 and Paul's Letter to the Romans, and to do so without question. In short, a kind of brainwashing. Despite all of the scientific and societal evidence to the contrary, this evidence is still not entirely persuasive. They still truly believe that homosexuality is an abomination, that gays defile children, are all perverts, blah blah blah. This firmness in holding on to these beliefs arises, partially, from a sense that they are right - and have the words of God Himself to prove it - when the rest of the world around them is wrong. And only through following them and making generous financial contributions can the world be saved from such EVIL, so hey kids, who wants to side with David against the faggot Goliath?
Again, these beliefs are outmoded and run counter to several decades' worth of scientific research and theological contemplation on this issue. Yet it still remains with us. In part because of their own smarmy sense of superiority, but also because they are working within a society still ingrained with centuries of anti-gay propaganda and hatred. A society tailored to many of the toxic ideas they hold in such high regard. People are stubborn with the beliefs they have grown up with, and to seem as if they are siding with the devil would be morally wrong (never mind that they are the ones who are morally wrong). And if the public has something different to say to such old and hurtful beliefs . . . well, public opinion be damned. Old habits truly are the ones that die hardest.
Cowards.
Even for those who are not closet-cases, yes, these people are cowards. For not standing up on behalf of their fellow brothers and sisters, for daring to claim they represent in hatred a deity that stands only for love, and for their efforts to continue spreading a dangerous and lethal ideology. And the fear, too. The fear alone can be spirit-crushing, the kind that rules a life and lasts a lifetime.
No, I did not mean this to be a generalization to all homophobes. I'm just simply presenting one possible explaination, one that I have seen all too often (hence the introduction explaining gaydar)
