Yesterday, WPI played MIT in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship game in men's basketball. As everybody knows, I would have been there if I was in Worcester, but I haven't been able to really follow the team since I am in Fresno, CA doing my MQP. I thought I would just have to miss this game like all the otheres in the second half of the season. But not this year. For the 1st time ever, the NEWMAC webcasted a basketball game (both radio and video). Since the game started at 1 EST, it might seem a little early to watch a basketball game at 10am PST on a Sunday morning. But hey, it was 10am and all I had to do was sit up in bed and go to the website. I wonder how many people actually tuned in to the webcasts to hear or watch a game between a bunch of engineers who go to prestigious schools in Massachusetts.
Apparently, the video commentators were stationed way up above the crowds in the enclosed press boxes because you couldn't hear anything other than them talking. It was strange to watch the game online because sure you're watching WPI kick ass like always, but the atmosphere wasn't there. There was a funny moment that happened either in the 1st half or during halftime. The commentators were away from their mics, but forgot to turn them off. They were discussing what to call the two teams. Problem is that both WPI and MIT are crimson and gray and both use the Engineers as their team names. So these intelligent guys decided the only way to refer to the teams is as WPI and MIT. Wow, genius. WPI went on to win the game 69-56 and will be playing in the Division III NCAA tournament. Hopefully, they can go farther than they did last year, which was the Sweet 16. They start off playing Bridgewater St. as the #3 seed in their region. WPI ended up ranked #22 in the country. UMass-Amherst is the #1 seed in the region.
I wonder if these guys will be broadcasting one particular game in the tournament. It might be a tough one for them. It's York, PA vs York, N.Y. I have no idea if they have different mascots but hey their both schools named York.
