End of Era

This week was a very important week for us and our project. We had hoped to be saviors for Gallo an help them reduce the costs associated with using DE as a filter aid. Well as a result of our experiments this week, we found out that DE can be regenerated for some liquids but not all. So this means we can't regenerate DE after it is used and Gallo will keep having to dispose of it. Oh well. There goes half of our project.

But hey, that's good news. That could only mean that we will have to propose more sweeping changes to there filtration process. And they will work. The more and more we work on these other technologies, the more and more we believe they will work. The cool thing is that it turns out that some of these technologies are short-term solutions and some are long-term. Obviously, the short-term solution can be a long-term solution, but there is a reason why they are short-term solutions. That reason is simple, especially if you're a businessman. Its economics.

On Friday, we finally got our membrane filter system set up. That was a process. We had guys from Maintenance help us out. Well, it didn't work like we thought at first. We weren't getting the pressure required in the system and that was only one of many problems. We talked to Lupe about the engineering behind the system. He helped us correct our problems and by the end of the day we had it all fixed up. Then came the lesson time. We had to talk to him about lessons learned from this experience. It was kind of embarassing to discuss our failures, but at the same time we were able to learn so much from them with Lupe's help. It was a very important week. It was a very stressful week. It dramatically increased our optimism for other parts of our project. And on that note, we were ready to get out of there. Since Lupe's teaching held us longer than we expected, we had to sit around for half an hour extra and wait for Enterprise to come pick us up. We were taking a day trip to San Francisco on Saturday. That will have to wait for a separate entry.
