He’s sitting there, crouched on a narrow locker room bench, warm-up jacket around his shoulders and red fabric in a pile where his shirt has fluttered to the concrete floor. He bends to unlace his boots, fingers pausing when a figure stalks by. Without  more than a peripheral glance, Jeff knows. Knows who it is. Knows how white satin bunches and billows, black pants cling, and red winds loosely around the column of throat. Knows how those dark eyes glint, steeled under drawn brows, struggling to smother any trace of thought, emotion, weakness. Knows how lanky limbs shake so slightly that most wouldn’t notice unless they were actually looking. Knows the emotions roiling and clashing in that thin chest, barely held in by tanned skin and thin fabric. Knows the slightest weight of that small piece of metal and ribbon can weigh one down more than a lead weight. Knows how, even at an otherwise young age, their bodies are failing and old beyond their years. Knows the strongest damn relationship any one of them will ever have is a struggle, a love-hate need for adrenalin and bruises and cold freedom. Knows the need for space and closeness, soothing words and silence.

But Jeff knows other things too. Knows how feather-light kisses can blur out the rest of the world better than any drug. Knows that not all aches will heal with time, but can at least be soothed, for  moment. Knows how taut flesh and lean muscle look in the half light of a shadowed moon. Knows how to burn away memories of cold ice with warm hands. Knows the depth those guarded eyes hide. Knows the strength of whispered promises is more than that of any loud congratulations or silent disappointment. Knows, instinctively, when too much is never enough.

fic, what is this i don't even
