Thanks for
whiteadelphi for the heads up on this!
I love this manga, which has some of the most amazing artwork I've ever seen in a comic, but I have to say it's really really weird seeing it animated. If I'm recognizing the animation style correctly, it looks like it's being done by the same studio that produced the Rurouni Kenshin OAVs. They're certainly the studio I would have gone to for this particular manga as well, since they're very good at portraying more realistic anime designs. Not very happy with the music they picked for this promo though...doesn't fit the subject at all.
http://mugen.kc.kodansha.co.jp/eizou.html Hiroaki Samura apparently resisted his manga being adapted for animation for many, many years, mostly on artistic grounds I think. His style is much more artsy and realistic than what you usually find in Japanese comics; most of any volume will be beautifully shaded pencil sketches mixed with sketchy inks, with color being reserved for the covers. He obviously uses life references for everything, and his action sequences are stunning and powerful. Not to mention the awesome story and characters. Definitely an inspiring guy!
I'm really curious to actually see this show and whether it does justice to the source material. I mean the first Rurouni Kenshin OAV? Amazing. The second one? Not so much; really butchered the story and characters, IMO. So we shall see.
