Got some more images sent to me today by other members of the Sakura Group, a group photo of all of us in kimono:
On Sunday I was asked by one of the members if I could tutor their 2nd grade daughter in English writing and reading comprehension. I was a little worried about it since the girl's reaction to her mom informing of her of this wasn't great. But I needn't have worried, the kid is absolutely adorable, and did really well with the stuff I asked her to work on. Her mom's providing the workbooks and everything, so minimal effort on my part really. I'm always amazed by how quickly young children learn multiple languages; this little girl is fluent in Japanese (of course) but also excellent at English, I can talk to her at a normal speed (unlike most of the Japanese adults living here I know) and she'll understand me perfectly. Really she's no better or worse at writing and reading than any native English speaker her age. Plus she loves Hello Kitty and insisted on showing me her huge collection. Heh, and here I thought I was a bit of a HK dork....nope, I have nothing on this kid's 100+ Hello Kitty dolls o_O;;
Not sure how I keep getting sucked back into education-related things, but the occasional tutoring gig I really don't mind, it was doing it full time that didn't work for me. I really do like working with kids, so this should be fun :)
