Let's talk about Gabriel. At least, the way I percieve and play him. :3
How would you describe him in one sentence?
A non apologetic hide-and-seek master with cosmic powers and intimate knowledge of everyone around him; admittedly, a dick.
Do you prefer his canon or fanon representation?
I think fandom does a pretty good job of representing him well, though I maintian the stance that he doesn't apologise for anything, and that he doesn't ask for anything.
What are his character flaws/imperfections?
He never apologizes, never says 'please', and he has no problem using his terrible and awesome powers to mess with lives. He's a coward where his family is concerned, and loved them too much to fight them.
What are his character strengths?
Despite everything, Gabriel's actually been trying to help the Winchesters. He honestly loves humanity, is supremely clever, and seems to be following his father's orders, if not in a twisted roundabout fashion. He's got a sense of humour, genuinely, and understands humans better than probably any other angel.
What is his alignment?
I think back in the holy days, Gabriel was
Neutral Good - ( quote: "To a neutral good being, life and the assurance of other creatures' rights take precedence over all else. This is not to say that this character will have an aversion to taking another's life when faced with a choice between an attacker's and his own, however. Neutral good beings also believe that law and chaos are merely tools to use in bringing life, prosperity, and happiness to all deserving creatures. Neither numbers nor individual concerns have any bearing on decisions regarding the needs and rights of any given creature. In other words, in the view of a neutral good being, rarely will either the needs of the many or the personal desires of an individual outweigh the needs of any other creature. All life is given even-handed treatment. As with all alignments neutral with respect to law and chaos, self-reliance is a cornerstone of a neutral good being's personality. In a crunch, neutral good characters trust in themselves and in no other individual or group. This doesn't mean they can't make friends and develop trusting relationships with others, however. Neutral good beings aren't normally as independent as chaotic good beings, and they can cooperate in groups. But they won't always trust a group to be more effective than they could be themselves.")
As the Heavenly wars continued on, I think Gabriel progressed into
Chaotic Neutral - ( quote: "Chaotic neutral characters believe that there is no order to anything, including their own actions. With this as a guiding principle, they tend to follow whatever whim strikes them at the moment. Good and evil are irrelevant when making a decision. Chaotic neutral characters are extremely difficult to deal with. Such characters have been known to cheerfully and for no apparent purpose gamble away everything they have on the roll of a single die. They are almost totally unreliable. In fact, the only reliable thing about them is that they cannot be relied upon!
Chaotic neutral characters like to indulge in everything. This is the insurgent, the con-man, gambler, and high roller; the uncommitted freebooter seeking nothing more than self-gratification. This type of character will at least consider doing anything if they can find enjoyment or amusement. Life has meaning, but theirs has the greatest meaning. According to chaotic neutrals, laws and rules infringe on personal freedom and were meant to be broken. This character is always looking for the best deal, and will work with good, neutral, or evil to get it; as long as he comes out of the situation on top. The chaotic neutral is constantly teetering between good and evil, rebelling, and bending the law to fit his needs.")
Talk about his canon:
He's had four episodes - two as Trickster, one as Trickster/Gabriel, one as Gabriel/Loki. I know he's technically all of that all the time, but in terms of what we see, that's the breakdown.
I have most of it worked out on my rp Gabriel journal - his information entry is
here. It's not updated with his Hammer of the Gods information, though.
In HotG, we learn that he's had a relationship of some sort with Kali ( "Do you still love me?" "No.") and genuinely wanted to get her out of the hotel alive. He's also familiar with the other gods of various religions, but is completely recognized as being Loki - whether this is because Gabriel has somehow taken Loki's place, or perhaps merged with Loki himself, or if this is because Gabriel is Loki, it was never said.
Gabriel has always refered to himself as getting a 'face transplant' - which would imply that he has taken/was given his Trickster guise. It would also explain why him hiding behind it was so effective in hiding from other angels, and from other gods.
My question - when Gabriel faced Lucifer, did Lucifer recognize him because of his greeting ("Lucy, I'm home.") and the knife he'd been carrying? Did Gabriel reverse the 'face-transplant'? Separate himself from the Trickster guise? When his angelic self was killed, did his Trickster self (the Trickster) flee to safety?
I'm sure it's as simple as Gabriel stopped pretending and Lucifer killed him, full stop. But it's nice to theorize.
OFF TO WORK. BUT YOU SHOULD ASK GABRIEL QUESTIONS OR SOMETHING. I'LL HAVE HIM ANSWER WHEN I GET HOME TONIGHT ♥
